The egg test
Posted by Don Packett under Uncategorized on February 25 2005 at 9:33 AM
SA is known for it’s farming and other such Afrikaner sports. So it’s no surprise that when it comes to food products, there’s a lot to choose from. Over the past few weeks I’ve been conducting a test to see which are the best overall extra large-size eggs Joburg has to offer. The eggs that competed were:
* Golden Lay
* Farmer Doep’s
* Pick ‘n Pay No Name
The results were as follows:
* Golden Lay: Very hard shell, which makes cracking them open quite a mission, often resulting in the most of the egg white falling outside the bowl. Yolk size – medium. Score: 6/10.
* Farmer Doep’s: Man, did I regret buying a 30-pack of these bad boys! I thought Farmer Doep would be as cool as Farmer Brown! Very brittle shell, making separating the yolk and white a task so insane that it spoilt more than one day for me. Yolk size – smallish. Score: 3/10
* Pick ‘n Pay No Name: Medium strength shell, making cracking and separating a pleasure. Yolk size – medium. Score: 8/10.
There you have it folks, the best eggs in Joburg belong to the coop-slaving chickens that produce for P’nP! Congratulations, your bag of seeds are in the post.

I guess it depends on what you’re looking for in eggs…. You see, a harder shell means the chickens had more calcium in their diet, which were probably a lot more balanced too – especially if the yolk is nice and dark yellow/orange and the white is firm (doesn’t run all over the place, but sorta makes a “mound”).
After doing a similar experiment, but based on taste, I’m sticking to free-range, grain fed chicken eggs only. Can no longer stomach those slightly fishy-tasting non-free-range eggs, nor the thought of how the poor beasts must live…!
But then again, these days I’m trying to go as organic, home-grown and free-range in my foodstuffs as humanly possible. I like to know where my food comes from.
Anyone want tomatoes? The garden’s over-producing again…

Nothing about PnP Omega eggs? Those things scare me, so I have never tried one. They are first call Omega and second there is a sticker on the side saying something like “Made in conjunction with CSIR”
WTF is the CSIR doing with eggs?!?
