Do these grapes taste a bit funny to you?
Posted by Rich...! under Uncategorized on March 28 2005 at 8:08 PMI’m really struggling with how to write this post, as a runner up I can only imagine how it’s going to come across, but fuck it, it needs to be said.
| First port of call was Obz café in Observatory for the first South African Blog awards. (A blog is a website like 2oceansvibe with a daily diary entry known as a ‘web log’ – hence the word ‘blog’ – get it?). With the bulk of the first South African blog community in J’burg, most of the awards were from the same part of the country. Obviously we thought we would do our bit for Cape Town and take the award for best overall blog site.
Yes, and it’s all thanks to you. For the category best overall website, there were 10,000 votes. We think it was very naughty of you lot to give 6,000 of those votes to us. That’s not a win, my love, that’s a landslide. That’s not very fair on the other competitors. But I’m sure you all played your part in the victory and we would like to dedicate it to each and every one of you. It is OUR award. |
I just read this on 2Oceansvibe, the winner of the best overall blog at the SABlogawards, and I it really, really got my back up.
- He needs to explain to his readers what a blog is, that’s just crazy.
- He got the category wrong, it’s not “website of the year.” although I can understand why he got confused.
- No feed
- Not a single link in the post.
- No permalinks anywhere (isn’t that the cornerstone of blogging?).
- No trackbacks.
- He’s a pretentious sounding twat (oops, that was a wee bit of sour grapes).
The bottom line…
2Oceansvibe is not a blog…!
March 28th, 2005 at 8:32 pm
you are right, he is a pretentious sounding twat.
March 29th, 2005 at 9:37 am
No feed, no view. Simple.
Out of sight, out of mind.
March 29th, 2005 at 9:48 am
Damn straight.
Also, 10 000 votes…? Uh, OK, if you say so buddy.
March 29th, 2005 at 11:28 am
Come on…
Of course he sounds pretentious. Seth always does. He’s built a bit of a brand around a site and it works.
I don’t know about the figures of the voting, but to me a blog is a site that has regular dated entries. He doesn’t have to link to other blogs, or even be involved in this blogging community. It’s still a blog.
And as for the feeds, they are a way of providing people with information. If his site works without it, and if he doesn’t want to use them, so be it. It still doesn’t take away from it being a blog. And quite a fun one at times.
I don’t know what a permalink is (let me add YET – for if it is in fact the cornerstone of blogging I should maybe look into it), and I’m not sure about trackbacks. Surely these are all just ways of circulating traffic? A certain technology? If I wanted to just post my diary online every day, and was unaware of any of these things, would that mean that mine was not a blog?
I disagree. Think of the site and of Seth what you will, but there’s no obligation for a blog to follow certain technical obligations. Or certainly shouldn’t be.
March 29th, 2005 at 12:48 pm
Thank you konrad, I agree. I am somewhat doff when it comes to all the technical stuff (anyone who has seen how limited my blog is can attest to this) but my blog is still a blog. I realise how vital feeds and such are, but I have had to figure it all out myself. I think the shittest thing about 20Oceansvibe is their arrogance and assumption that they are the best. I hadn’t even heard of them before the awards, and besides, for a CT blog, they seem to be more intent on globe-trotting than local stuff, and it is more like some sort of tourist site than a blog. It’s also boring as hell. Now come on Rich…don’t be so anal about untech bloggers!
March 29th, 2005 at 1:13 pm
Konrad, I have to disagree with you. On the Missing Link site I use a blog engine (a few actually)to post my data, that in itself doesn’t constitute a blog, what it is is a site that’s regularly updated that uses the convenient blog engine to function.
Blogging far supersedes that, (or at least the essence of blogging does) blogging is not about just serving content, that’s just owning a website. Blogging is about starting conversations, it’s about creating entire networks.
Linking, trackbacks, comments, feeds, these things aren’t an add-on to blogging, they are blogging. I really can’t stress this enough.
There certainly shouldn’t be technical guidelines for how someone runs their site, I am in absolute agreement, 2oceansvibe is a really great site with a lot of very loyal readers and I both respect and envy that, but so is CNN.com, you wouldn’t call it a blog though. We are talking about a competition here, in this case there must be guidelines and criteria.
To me this has overshadowed the event in a big way. We did a lot better than we could possibly have hoped for, but the fact that 2oceansvibe won has made the victory worthless to me, because I realise that whole thing was a farce, that’s why we haven’t mentioned it here. There are many blogs I would far rather have lost to.
Oh, and your permalinks, the links at the end of a post that allow me to “spread the word” are working fine, I linked to one of your posts just yesterday…!
March 29th, 2005 at 1:17 pm
Rox, it’s not about being anal. Your blog works perfectly. You comment, you link, you have a feed, basically you both interact, and allow interaction. It has nothing to do with how tech you are…!
March 29th, 2005 at 1:22 pm
Konrad, Rox, you have valid points, but here’s the skinny on the technical architecture that makes blogging what it is (and yes, the technical part is important, because without considering this, we’re taking a step back to the 90s):
A large part of blogging is about spreading ideas, and conversations about ideas, very quickly. The technical features that 2Oceansvibe lacks are, quite simply, fundamental to this spreading thing.
Firstly, the feed: Crucial. Without it, the only way for people to get to Seth’s content is to visit the site. When you start consuming a lot of information, it’s just no fun opening webpages the whole time. Ask Rich…!, he’ll tell you why. Also, there’s no way to aggregate (ie distribute) the content, so no way for it to become part of a global conversation or idea-tank (think in terms of a search engine built to monitor specific sources (ie feeds) for specific ideas – powerful stuff).
Secondly, the permalinks: If I wanted to link to a specific post (which might contain something interesting that I’d like to stash for reference or share with someone else), I’m stuck with 20ceansvibe. It’s like information filing. They have none.
Thirdly, trackback: Say I thought that Seth brought up a good idea, or he had a point, or something. Say I wrote about this idea in my blog, and expanded on it, maybe pointing out something he missed. Well, without trackback, there’s no way for anyone to see what people have thought/said about a post, so no conversation can evolve. Hell, without comments, there’s no conversation in the first place…
So, to summarise:
2Oceansvibe is NOT a blog. It’s a site with news snippets, ordered by date. Simple as that.
March 29th, 2005 at 1:25 pm
Rich…!, you pipped me to the post… I was busy previewing while you’d already posted the comment!
March 29th, 2005 at 2:38 pm
Thanks Martin, after staring blankly at the screen as read your comment, I finally got the point. So maybe I’m not as clueless as I thought I was, (thanks Rich for setting me straight)and I am now more enlightened on the blogness of blogs. But now I am left with a burning question: if 20Oceans is NOT a blog, how the fuck did they even get nominated in ,let alone win, a blog awards? Is it just me, or does seem a trifle screwed?
March 29th, 2005 at 2:50 pm
I just feel that it is because links TO the blog are important to the WRITER that permalinks exist. This does not mean that a site that does not have permalinks is not a blog. If someone put up a simple online diary on one single html page, that would surely be a blog?
I don’t mean to be difficult, and I see why permalinks and trackbacks etc. are important in the so called blogosphere, but they are certainly not important in qualifying a site as a blog. It does not have to allow for comments, or facilitate conversation. It can simply exist out there.
Now whether these factors should be taken into account when voting for a best overall blog is a different story altogether. (Maybe why the webby awards, for example, have a winner and a people’s choice winner).
March 29th, 2005 at 3:54 pm
What makes a blog?
There’s a bit of noise going around about 2OceansVibe winning the overall blog award at the recent Bloggies, specifically because at point value it’s not a blog. This fiend showed its head at the J’burg chapter of the awards, but not to a great cap…
March 29th, 2005 at 4:00 pm
Woo! Hot topic – I haven’t seen a string of comments on a local site like this for a while! (bar REdSaid, of course).
I trackbacked to my full post on this (see top), but basically a blog does require certain criteria, else any site could enter the competition. Since blogs do not hinge on personal opinion (because you get plenty of blogs that are impersonal, for record keeping or simply news blogs), you need technical criteria.
Personally I don’t regard 2Oceans as a blog. It fails on too many points that makes it down-right inconvenient to use when compared to other blogs. It’s not that it lacks specific things: it lacks almost all of them. With no decent archiving (on a per-post level), feeds, permalinks, trackbacks or even comments, it manages to sideline almost all the elements that would identify a blog. Livejournal fills the criteria better than 2C does.
2C is a journal site, but not a blog. Else you have to assume that all blogs are journals – which is just as inaccurate.
March 29th, 2005 at 4:38 pm
(in your best stoned accent)like jesus bro.. what the fudge is a blog?
and and why you all getting like so huffed about it?
and besides Jo’Blog rocks dude.
like chill dude.
and i went to 20oceans and like it sucked dudes.
and besides Jo’Blog rocks dude.
March 29th, 2005 at 4:55 pm
(in heavy nasal koegel voice) Doll, rilly, I don’t get it either. I feel like, skaam to be from Cape Town all of a sudden, because of that kak blog, 2Oceans or whatever they call themselves. I should just, totally relocate. Jis laaik, what a moerse issue that blog has caused. Can’t we contest their win?

I was going to be a bit sarky, but not that nasty. When I tried to post my comment I got this gem: “In an effort to combat malicious comment posting by scripts, I’ve enabled a feature that requires a weblog commenter to wait a short amount of time before being able to post again.”
WTF? Have you started *gasp* censoring Jo’Blog? Or was it a technical error?
March 29th, 2005 at 5:03 pm
Oops, think I fucked that up somehow. Oh well, it was worth it to get that message!
March 29th, 2005 at 9:51 pm
ah, you have a point, actually quite a few points. Nothing to do with sour grapes
I’m surprised 2oceans is mentioned so often on the awards. It looks more like some type of holiday/news/touristy website.
March 30th, 2005 at 7:37 am
like Hey Rox…
like at least you have the m o u n t a i n doll !
March 30th, 2005 at 8:30 am
2Oceans who?
March 30th, 2005 at 11:29 am
I’ve just been reminded why I hate awards.
March 30th, 2005 at 4:29 pm
like is’nt that a road running race ?

* Blogs = Cluetrain tool
Martin said it well: a blog is a great medium to create a conversation with people interested in what you do, be it for personal purposes, to help position a brand, or both.
A lot of bloggers use a blog as a personal repository for their thoughts and observations, and as readers discover and find them entertaining, so they’re encouraged to write more (or not, in some cases). I use the medium for both: to create a conversation around what I do, especially as it’s difficult to encapsulate it in a sound bite. It’s also a place for me to archive my thinking/observations and to find my ‘voice’, “Artist’s Way” style. It is also a way of giving my brand a personality.
Seth is using his online presence as a way of marketing his services (holiday accomodation/chaperone/visitor guides) in a way that reflects his public persona. In short, it seems to be a great marketing tool for him. He comes across as arrogant, and maybe that’s his public face and it isn’t nice, but I met him in Obz with two of his mates, and they seem really cool, genuine guys, so by association he must be ok too if you remove the bluster.
But as a contender for best SA blog? Not sure – conversations need to be two way, and not single-mindedly a marketing tool. “Best use of a blog to support a business” category maybe…
Joblog certainly is a candidate for this – gives Missing Link personality and creates a conversation around some aspects of their work, but not solely dedicated to it.
As for the SA Blog Awards, it’s an evolving thing, and issues like this improve the quality of conversation around what the 2006 ones will encompass. Shot Cherryflava, you started something cool here with the 2005 ones.
April 13th, 2005 at 12:27 pm
Hi Guys. Thanks for that.
Let’s go through the points one by one and then we can have our say.
1) Why is it crazy that I have to explain to my users what a blog is? Don’t forget that a blog is still a website. If I told my father to go to gawker.com because there is a brilliant article he must read, does he automatically know it is a ‘blog’? Definately not. If my father, in turn, tells his friend to look at the site, would he be wrong to refer to it as a ‘website’? No, is the answer. A website is a website is a website, my love.
2) Apologies for making an error in describing the category. In the first paragraph I said it was the SA Blog Awards. Then, when I described the award I never used the word ‘blog’. Apologies. If there was a South African Sports car award and a car won Best Yellow Car, would you get angry that people might confuse it with other cars which aren’t sports cars? No you wouldn’t – you would know it was the Sports Car Awards. Should I get out some crayons and draw you a picture?
Here you go : WITHIN the SA blog Awards, my WEBSITE was best overall BLOG. Let’s not get be silly.
Now items 3,4,5 and 6 all fall under the following blurb I have researched:
These points refer to extra tools and things that enhance blog sites – feeds, permalinks, trackbacks etc. Before getting to these we need to get some definitions of the term ‘blog’ site. This page (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-36,GGLD:en&oi=defmore&q=define:Blog) shows a large number of definitions. Check it out if you want. Here are some of them:
These are what I see as the essence of blogging:
“A short form for weblog, a personal journal published on the Web. Blogs frequently include philosophical reflections, opinions on the Internet and social issues, and provide a “log” of the author’s favorite web links. Blogs are usually presented in journal style with a new entry each day.” Tick
“a public web site where users post informal journals of their thoughts, comments, and philosophies, updated frequently and normally reflecting the views of the blog’s creator.” Tick
“An online Journal.” Tick
“Blog is short for weblog. A weblog is a journal that is frequently updated and intended for general public consumption. Blogs generally represent the personality of the author or the Web site. Being labelled pretentious by Jo’Blog certainly is a winner with this description. 2oceansvibe therefore represents the personality of the author.” Tick.
“Web log A publication of personal thoughts to a web site in reverse chronological order; the content and quality varies greatly depending on the purpose of the author. Many bloggers view the writing as an online diary with an audience. Web logs began in mid 1990s with the advent of free web publishing tools.”
So let’s read this one very carefully. This means that weblogs were around before software that included functions that helped the streamlining and growth of blogs (permalinks, trackbacks). 2oceansvibe is designed by hand and doesn’t use new age blogging software. By the way, trackbacks aren’t offered by all the software packages out there. I think only Typepad. Also, millions of blog sites don’t have feeds.
“Contraction from the term Web Log. This is an online diary or journal which is published and shared with others on the web by an individual, who is known as a “blogger”. “Blogging” has now become a very popular publishing method on the web as the software does not require any technical knowledge to use and this has the potential to move into the corporate world soon.”
Again, with the software…. came extra functions. When people had hand coded diary entry sites, they had none of the functions that come with the software that let’s others join the craze.
“Short for Weblog. Any portion of a Web site that is constantly updated with new information.”
“A weblog, web log or simply a blog, is a web application which contains periodic posts on a common webpage. These posts are often but not necessarily in reverse chronological order. Such a website would typically be accessible to any Internet user. The term “blog” came into common use as a way of avoiding confusion with the term server log.” Even MORE interesting.
Now this is my ABSOLUTE favourite reference.
This is called THE HISTORY OF WEBLOGS (http://newhome.weblogs.com/historyOfWeblogs)
They state the following:
The first weblog was the first website, http://info.cern.ch/, the site built by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN. From this page TBL pointed to all the new sites as they came online. Luckily, the content of this site has been archived (http://www.w3.org/History/19921103-hypertext/hypertext/WWW/News/9201.html) at the World Wide Web Consortium.
Please join me in enjoying the very first sentence : THE FIRST WEBLOG WAS THE FIRST WEBSITE. Copy and paste this URL into your browser to have a look at it (http://www.w3.org/History/19921103-hypertext/hypertext/WWW/News/9201.html)
I don’t see any RSS feeds, trackbacks or any other techie talk. IT IS A DAILY DIARY ENTRY WEBSITE. Plain and simple. THEY CALL THAT A BLOG. NO MATTER HOW MANY FANCY FEATURES IT DOESN’T HAVE THAT MAKE IT MORE USER FRIENDLY – IT IS STILL A VERY SIMPLE BLOG.
TO SUM UP:
Basically, I was blogging before the software became so sophisticated and well known. At the beginning, blogging software had NO trackbacks and NO RSS feeds. I didn’t need the software then because I designed my own website using website design software which allowed me to do even MORE than the simple blog software available.
IF I HAD TO SWITCH TO THE MORE SOPHISTICATED BLOG SOFTWARE OUT THERE THAT ALLOWS DIRECT LINKS TO ARTICLES ETC, IT WOULD MEAN CHANGING THE ENTIRE LAYOUT OF 2OCEANSVIBE AND HAVING TO INPUT ALL THE PAST ARTICLES INTO THE NEW SOFTWARE SYSTEM. I COULD SPEND TIME AND MONEY TO ‘ADD NEW FEATURES ONTO MY SITE’.
IF SIMPLY CHANGING MY SOFTWARE PACKAGE (WITH ADDED FEATURES) IS THE SOLE REASON WHY
YOU THINK I AM NOT A BLOG THEN I APOLOGISE –
I DON’T HAVE THE TIME TO DO IT.
I AM A FRAUD, PLEASE STRIP ME OF MY AWARD.
April 13th, 2005 at 1:17 pm
Oh, rad, thanks.
WE WON…!.
April 13th, 2005 at 1:30 pm
tech-geek losers.
Does Mark Keohane’s blog have track-back, feeds or the new .5blog-doc power tool 500+? I don’t know and I don’t care. He gets millions of page hits because people (as opposed to bloggers like the Jo’bloggers) only care about good content.
So long as your blog stays a techie dick-measuring contest, you’ll keep getting 5 hits a day from all your fellow sun-deprived bloggers.
April 13th, 2005 at 1:40 pm
Well said… RSS feeds are nice and everything, but I’m sure the people at the blog awards meant to reward the most entertaining blog, which 2oceansvibe is by a long margin. I’m not very into techie stuff, I don’t have 500 different feeds to ensure I know exactly what Steve Jobs said 5 minutes ago, I just enjoy good writing.
As for “Seth is using his online presence as a way of marketing his services” – I don’t think many 2oceansvibe rent holiday flats in Cape Town. That’s cos we live here.
April 13th, 2005 at 3:27 pm
I agree 100%. Did someone make a rule that says bloggers cannot advertise on their websites? Who cares if 2oceans don’t have any fancy features to make them link to other websites? They still give daily logs. Surely that is all you need to be a blog site?
WOW, you guys are bad losers!
April 13th, 2005 at 4:18 pm
Wow, what a load of crap.
You are a sore loser.
One thing I can say is what an UNinteresting site you have here.
At least I dont fall asleep while reading 2oceansvibe. It really is quiet a VIBE!!!
You guys are crazy of course the site is a blog.
Oh by the way. CONGRATS Seth
April 13th, 2005 at 4:20 pm
i think these jo’ moer, i mean jo’ bloggers are just pissed off because they read 2oceans and ask themselves: “why didnt we do out blog like this”. thats because your heads are stuck so far up your arse holes that the oxygen supply is being cut off from your little brains.
April 13th, 2005 at 4:31 pm
…and then the teenage fan club stepped in!
April 13th, 2005 at 5:02 pm
Whoa, Seth. Have you been writing that reply ever since we first posted that bit? Sheesh…
Oh, and thanks for sharing some of that lovely CT wit. Jo’moer? Ha ha! Very clever!
And a great big ‘well done!’ to the rest of you Capetonian who obviously got and understood the original point of the post. Can’t slip anything past you rabid, foaming lot, can we?
April 13th, 2005 at 5:53 pm
if this is the sort of shite that appears on this ‘blog’ regularly, then I’m for 2oceansvibe.
It takes quite a talent to write a blog ytterly devoid of interest, but you’ve achieved it. Now there’s an idea for an award……………
The Dullard Award goes to…..
April 13th, 2005 at 5:59 pm
*Sigh* Seth, love, you just don’t really get what this is about, do you?
Oh well, maybe I should also just become a drunk, party-going, enjoy-life-without-realising-the-bigger-picture liability to the world. (Sorry, tried to illustrate a point with individual articles, but no permalink)….While I’m at it, I’ll call people that are smarter than me “losers”, because they don’t drink every night, they don’t smoke, they’re not in “sales” or an “executive position” and they don’t hang around with brainless bimbos. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do. From tomorrow.
Then again, a lot of revenue is generated by drunks. Revenue which can be applied usefully somewhere. OK, wait, I’ll take back the previous paragraph’s comments, and stick to smiling and nodding at the drunks instead.
PS: Isn’t it funny how Mr Rotherham’s advanced trackback abilities keep him so up-to-speed that he only found out about this post, like, now? Although, D’ave’s probably right about the typing thing…
April 13th, 2005 at 6:16 pm
I hope those of you who have stepped back to enjoy this little war create itself, have kept an eye on the jo’burg lot. They start fuming and post an article which is more like an ‘angry-angry-little-man-moaning’ thing and even gone so far as to have listed their anger in point fashion. They were whinging. They were promptly slapped in the face and others rubbed it in. Now is the moment they turn to sarcasm, Cape Town attacks and ‘we-were-joking’s’.
April 13th, 2005 at 7:20 pm
I’ll quickly come down to this level for a second, so as not to highlight too much the glaring revelation that is about to unfold.
With reference to the comment “PS: Isn’t it funny how Mr Rotherham’s advanced trackback abilities keep him so up-to-speed that he only found out about this post, like, now?”
Perhaps Jo’blog should work on it’s content and brand a little harder which in turn could increase it’s hit rate. From there it could use the blog site as a source of a large stream of potential clients for it’s other business activities? Perhaps presenting to the readers a persona that appeals to a very large target audience with good connections and disposable income? Reality TV and the Paris Hilton theme seem to quite popular around the world at the moment.
Apologies if keeping my eye on the ball resulted in my not noticing a little post on your ‘hobby site’ for so long.

April 13th, 2005 at 8:16 pm
I don’t give a crap what a blog is, but fuck it, it needs to be said.
The bottom line ….
2Oceansvibe => funny as hell
Jo’blog => boring
April 13th, 2005 at 8:42 pm
As a reader from the centre of the collonial universe, i’s like to say that a website that makes me laugh, and sometimes almost spit coffee at my pc screen with the downright sarcasm and wit that goes into it, gets my vote everytime. Therefore, 2oceansvibe has spread its way across the water to Europe without the need for permalinks or feeds or anything. Word of mouth does more than any trackback could people…
blog/log/diary/journal, whatever you want to call it, that’s all in the details really. It being enjoyable? Far more important I think.
April 13th, 2005 at 8:53 pm
and another thing,
I’d far rather be a pretentious twat than a boring cunt
April 13th, 2005 at 9:38 pm
Listen you Jo’blog computer geeks. 2Oceansvibe is one of the funniest sites on the net and it’s all because of Seth’s humour, wit and ability to see the funny shit in everyday happenings. I read the site everyday from the British Virgin Islands and have never heard of your “(J)erk(O)ff’blog before! I’ve never seen people who are more sore about loosing. Seth rules, 2oceans rules, Cape Town Rules, The British Virgin Islands Rules. I bet your hits have doubled with all the 2oceans supporters writing in to tell you how shit your site is.
April 13th, 2005 at 10:00 pm
Wats jou probleem Kazanksky? Rich. you’re a fucking loser. im sorry, but you really are.
April 13th, 2005 at 10:02 pm
On behalf of the blogging community, I’d like to thank the sheep for their input.
Let’s get back to our tech-geek hobbies then. Hey, someone’s gotta make the world work, so the sheep can hate their jobs, wait for the weekend, drink and procreate! And no, I’m not being sarcastic, ewe guys seem to be managing perfectly well…
(D’ave, that one’s for you)
April 13th, 2005 at 10:20 pm
2oceans rocks my world…got addicted to it in about 30 seconds, and ive been surfing round on this shitty site for 10minutes and cannot wait to leave and never come back.
fuck all the haters out there, youre just jealous because seth is kicking your ass at this whole blog thing…get over yourselves and just accept the fact that the 2oceans team is just *that* much better than you.
im done ranting for now…going back to my beloved 2oceans and getting in a good mood once again. living overseas can be a real bitch but i know that when i get home from class or from hockey practice that i can rely on a witty post or email from The Master himself. I think if i the option to come home and read jo’blog or slit my wrists…i would ask for someone to hand me a knife =)
Jo’Bloggers…’try again next year dearies
SETH IS A STUD

April 13th, 2005 at 11:07 pm
For the record, this limp-wristed fuck wank is from Joburg. And I don’t think 2oceans is exactly brimming with quality content either…
April 14th, 2005 at 12:11 am
I really think we’re all missing the point: Seth’s never even been on a chess team, let alone captained one. He probably hasn’t been in a library in years. Fuck, I don’t think he’s even got a maths degree at all. Worse still, I’ve seen him drink… and he definitely partakes of the fruits of the tree of knowledge. Who cares if his site’s funnier, more popular or sharper than this one… the point is, he’s not sticking to the rules. Next thing we’ll be calling Anne Frank’s Diary a “diary”, when everyone knows she didn’t rule her own lines before penning her thoughts. It’s a crime.

You guys are full of shit. http://www.2oceansvibe.com beat your boring blog hands down. If you wanna see something really fucked-up, go to http://www.watkykjy.blogspot.com.
It is a blog about the word “blog”.
April 14th, 2005 at 4:00 am
I have to apologise, I missed the heading:
“Alliance of limp-wristed Capetonian fuck wanks” conference (ALWCFWC)”
I would really like to join. I have a few problems though:
First of all I don’t live in Cape Town, which means I would prob have to move down there. No prob. Also, I sure as fuck like wanking a lot, although I don’t do it with a limp wrist (tennis) and I sure as wank like fucking a whole lot. Study this last sentence. It is constructed well clever. Ai’t.
April 14th, 2005 at 8:24 am
It is sad that there is this long list of entries on this site. It is sad that there are sun deprived people in the world who want to attack 2oceans like they do. I am sad I have watsed ten minutes of my day reading the entries. I have to look positively on it and say that I gained knowledge. Knowledge of sad, lonely, sour people. Even in JHB the sun shines and there are places to go. Do you not like wathcing little video clips of Paris? Beautiful pictures of naked women? are you all gay? or just sad? or just lonely? or all of the above?
April 14th, 2005 at 8:27 am
Jeez you folk from Joeys need to get out into the sunlight a little more – stretch those keyboard fingers…. 2Oceansvibe ROCKS!
April 14th, 2005 at 8:55 am
disregarding whether or not 2oceansvibe is a blog, a more pressing issue should be the fact that this (Jo’blog) is without a doubt the most boring site I’ve laid my pretty eyes on. ever.
April 14th, 2005 at 9:05 am
That’s cute. Did Seth pwomise a widdle lunchy-lunch for all his fluffers that left a nasty widdle comment?
It’s simple. Permalinks and trackbacks allow people to link to specific posts, making their links relevant. People can’t link to his posts, so he gets less traffic. If they do link, browsers have to read through all the other garble before they find what they’re looking for, unless that his plan…
Props to Seth for building his website from scratch, but with all these new features readily available, why doesn’t he adopt?
I’ll tell you why, because he’s lazy.
Seth, help us help you.
April 14th, 2005 at 9:07 am
Quote from Seth Rotherham at 2oceansvide – “I didn’t need the software then because I designed my own website using website design software which allowed me to do even MORE than the simple blog software available.”
If you’re so good at designing your own website, why don’t you add some COMMENT functionality to it?? I’m sure there is alot of people that would love to comment on some of your crappy posts…
April 14th, 2005 at 9:14 am
They don’t need comments, why go through all the hassle of adding comments if you can just freeload of this comment section?
That space can be put to much better use as classifieds.

First Annual Blog Wars (aka Waste of Bloody Time)
Jo’blog attacked 2Oceansvibe on the basis that 2Oceansvibe isn’t a blog.
I’ve been trying to ignore this issue, since I think it’s a complete waste of energy. And with the comment “He’s a pretentious sounding twat”, I knew it was simply a matt…
April 14th, 2005 at 9:27 am
Why can’t everyone just get along.
Ok I’m a little stuck in the middle here, seriously dig both blogs/sites. Having a RSS reader I check out Jo’Blog as soon as one of the chumps post, which is daily. Seth, dude you got a killer site. I try to keep up with your posts but lose interest quickly as they arn’t “forced” apon me and I’ll check your site out once a month because of it. Mate you have to upgrade your site to a blog, please do it for the fans.
April 14th, 2005 at 9:53 am
Blog software makes sites so ugly, boring – text based, techie friendly and shit.
Jo’blog is “too keen for a free shot”.
Put out (2oceans) or pull out (Jo’blog)!
April 14th, 2005 at 10:01 am
Mr Oakes, having visited your own website, and thinking you might have done so at least once or twice yourself, I’m inclined to think that you are aware of exactly how much of a big, fat, snotty-faced lie your above statement is.
You do know, don’t you.
April 14th, 2005 at 10:06 am
come on guys, jo’blog and joburg is not that bad – i’m from cape town and i worked there for a year. you open your door in the morning and still see your car standing outside untouched and you know its going to be a good day! the beautiful mine dumps, the sewerage plants, and to top it all off to finish the picture is that lovely layer of thick smog all over the place……. wait a minute …… fuck that! joburg is just as kak as this jo’blog.
April 14th, 2005 at 10:10 am
i just went to http://www.shaunoakes.com and it has some funny shit on it – i was there for ten minutes and saw more in that time than my time wasting 20 minutes on this disgrace of a site, shame Dave. I think its time to call it quits and concede defeat graciously to end the embarasment that you put on yourself and the rest of your “followers”.
April 14th, 2005 at 10:12 am
Special D, are you agreeing to the fact that 2Oceans isn’t a blog? You just handed Jozi the trophy buddy! Think before you comment.
April 14th, 2005 at 10:16 am
Quote from Don ” It’s simple. Permalinks and trackbacks allow people to link to specific posts, making their links relevant. People can’t link to his posts, so he gets less traffic. ”
Seth and 2oceansvibe clearly deserves to win if he still manages to get higher traffic without permalinks or trackbacks or whatever else you’re wanking off about. He doesn’t need support from other wank off blog sites. He gets it from the general public. Something you lot should try and do.
Jammo
April 14th, 2005 at 10:38 am
Wezzo, I’m not saying that at all.
I think 2oceansvibe is a blog – one that is unique and can’t be put into a box – which is a good thing.
Took a look at your blog, and it is a hell of a lot better than this Jo’blog.
I’m going surfing now – not the web – the real sea, Outerkom is 6ft and glassy!
April 14th, 2005 at 11:33 am
Three things:
1: Jo’Blog – you lost, deal with it, now get back to sellotaping your glasses together or whatever it is you techies do when not working on your carpal tunnel syndrome
2: Seth – nice one champ
3: Rox – The cleavage – LOVING IT!
April 14th, 2005 at 11:42 am
The esteemed blog gestapo,
It’s so very endearing that you are all so deeply concerned about what Seth does or does not do with his spare time. The part I like most is that Seth and 2oceansvibe are getting so much of your and your reader’s time. Sweet this little homage of yours. g*d, i love irony.
I came to your site with an open mind (really i did) only to find
(amongst other things), an annoying discussion of the intricacies of feeds and blah and yawn as well as the demerits of drinking (why would you do that). The only humourous part was how serious some of you take this.
Perhaps you should give some thought to tearing yourselves away from your tireless commitment to the alleged standard that is “the blog” and just try (simply a suggestion, don’t hurt yourselves) to go out and exhale.
[babysteps]
If that all seems a little wild and out of character (i thought it might), maybe you could (again, i merely suggest) spend your time improving your own site/blog/whatever and quit dedicating so much time to 2oceansvibe.
Even better, you could devise a blogging manual, or hell, why stop there, maybe some legislation even. you could even workshop these ideas on friday night.
Seth appears to be a social man about town kinda guy. As a result, the site and its international support speaks for itself.
You guys remind me of those irritating boys from school days. the ones who only know mrs palmer. Its really very silly.
April 14th, 2005 at 12:07 pm
By complaining, Joblog looks more like a loser than ever. Just accept the fact that you were absolutely destroyed and move on…Maybe try and use some of Seths ideas for your own site, after all they’re obviously working for him.
Jy is almal se probleem Kazansky!
April 14th, 2005 at 12:07 pm
Phew, thank heavens.
So, thanks to the public, uh, sheep for their opinion. Now stop wasting your employers’ bandwidth and get back to earning money for the weekend’s drinking!
April 14th, 2005 at 12:49 pm
dont enter a competition that relys on votes from “the sheep” as you call them. I mean if you have no respect for public opinion why does it piss you off so much that you lost?
April 14th, 2005 at 12:55 pm
Wezzo, still trying very hard to get that “trophy”, shame, means that much to you? Hope your day goes better.

April 14th, 2005 at 1:32 pm
Hi 2Ocean’s…
Call off your lackies!!!
Shame Shame Shame!
Vicky,
FYI wezzo has his own blog! he’s not part of joblog, so what fucking trophy is he after?
Grow up!
Thats maybe why the post was called ‘ Do These Grapes taste funny to you?’ Hence implying maybe its a case of Sour Grapes!
Not one of you CT people have had anyhing constructive to say? these guys gave reasons as to why they think they are not a blog!
Al you guys have done is make childish remarks about this blog and how boring it is and blah blah blah! thats not the fucking case!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you see Dumb and Dumber winning an oscar for best drama? why? coz its not a drama!!
But wait its still a movie so it must count!!!
Fuck it man!!
Yes a blog is a website but there are things that make them differ!!!
How bout this is the end of this fucking stupid jhb vs ct and blog vs blog!!
they stated an opinion!
its fine that u disagree it really is!
but to carry on like this!!
get over it already!
April 14th, 2005 at 1:45 pm
why dont you get off your high horse and take the carrot out of your arse, you seem really tense.
April 14th, 2005 at 2:08 pm
Hey, HIGH HORSE, you obviously never read Seth’s retort to why it is, in fact, a blog.
Now scroll up and hae a look at his breaking down of their arguments.
Have a look at the post by Seth Rotherham | April 13, 2005 12:27 PM”
You’ll find your little rant
“Do you see Dumb and Dumber winning an oscar for best drama? why? coz its not a drama!!
But wait its still a movie so it must count!!!”
holds no water.
He was saying that his site is a blog, but can also be referred to as a website (a different argument completely). With regards to it being a blog or not is properly explained in his retort as mentioned above. Go and have a read.
April 14th, 2005 at 2:14 pm

April 14th, 2005 at 3:26 pm
Vicky have you read my other comments? I’m with you on this one girl, I’m also with Jozi dudes. I really hope you hot – cause this is wasting my time. Anyway, I’m not part of Jo’Blog, the trophy was not mine for the winning. Seth won the prize fair and square no doubtin’ baby cakes. Special D commented that he didn’t like all the bloggy techie shite, I yes me then jumped in to ask what he meant.
Ok enough of that: Vicks is it long walks on the beach or flowers and chocolates hun.
April 14th, 2005 at 3:39 pm
Sorry Wezzo jumped in with out reading all the posts.
Yes I think I am rather hot, if I must say so myself. Beach, flowers and chocolate!
April 14th, 2005 at 3:46 pm
Wezzo, i think you’re in there!
I think this whole things/situation needs to be settled with a….
… Blog-Off!
thats right i said Blog-Off! (ooooh, gasp, atmosphere)

April 14th, 2005 at 3:51 pm
Hi, my name is Seth.
April 14th, 2005 at 3:53 pm
Isn’t this fun
Is that meant for me Seth?
April 14th, 2005 at 3:59 pm
Urg. Jammok, I do believe I understand what ol’ HighHorse was trying to say with the ‘Drama’ comment. Let me try it another way.
Would an 1980s Alpha Spider win ‘Sportscar of the Year’, today? Nope. Even though it is a sportscar, thus technically in the same category. Even if more people drive a Spider now, it wouldn’t win. Why?
Because sportscars have now developed far enough so that certain things have become industry standard: Airbags, tiptronic gears, on-board computers, ABS, flashy-warning light thingies, and other jobbies that are now entry level sportscar stuff. Things that enhance the ‘sportscar experience’, raising them a level or two.
They are no longer optional extras.
As blogging has grown, it has changed. You can’t rock around in an Oldsmobile and still expect to pick up all the betties.
As long as you realise that this is a comparison for the sake of concept explanation, and don’t now start throwing your toys about how awesome the Spider is, you should be fine.
I hope that analogy makes more sense, because I just confused the hell outta myself.
April 14th, 2005 at 4:18 pm
SURE!! It wouldn’t win. But it wouldn’t be stopped from entering….. Unless the competition was only for cars made this year.
There’s a CATEGORY for those blog sites – BEST NEW BLOG.
NAILED
April 14th, 2005 at 4:29 pm
Not really. The award is Best Overall Blog. This year. It’s like Blog of the Year. Just without the actual words written it. Don’t read too much into the analogy.
Idiot.
April 14th, 2005 at 4:41 pm
I guess the voters have voted. The results are in. 2oceans was an acceptable candidate. 2oceans won. Whats all the drama about? The readers have spoken…
April 14th, 2005 at 4:44 pm
Thanks for pointing that out, D’ave.
It’s for that reason that I added “2005″ to the logo. Simple, really. If you can read.
April 14th, 2005 at 8:32 pm
Keep joburg for yourself, it is a shithole.
Cape Town may be pretentious, But it is better than being a dickhead.
long live CT
April 14th, 2005 at 9:31 pm
D’ave, you’re so right. How the fuck any of these kids expect to argue with a guy who uses car analogies but can’t fucking spell Alfa… it’s beyond my comprehension.
April 14th, 2005 at 9:37 pm
Fuck. Did I say that out loud? This is the problem with this blogging thing. You professionals spend so much time trying to make us idiots think we’ve got what it takes to put our inane thoughts all over the fucking internet, and then equal amounts of time showing us how goddamn stupid we really are. I can’t even spell permalink, so blogging’s obviously not for me. Now, this stupid site is distracting me from things I can handle. Excuse my while I put a hammer through my laptop and head through to Camps Bay for a drink. I know it’s exclusive, this party life of the Alfa Male, but don’t hate us for it. It’s really all we’ve got.
April 14th, 2005 at 9:45 pm
this comment thread is getting a bit tired.
i’m of the opinion that my comment should be the last on this issue. get out there and make your own blogs and express your own point of view.
you can get a nice free blog with good looking templates from sites like http://www.blogger.com (with rss feeds, comments, and trackbacks).
i’m going to wank (i live in joburg)
April 15th, 2005 at 12:15 am
Come on team. Let’s move on. There are far more important things to worry about. Can we focus please?!?!?
Michael Jackson licked a child’s head – FOR GOD’S SAKE !
April 15th, 2005 at 7:48 am
Shit. Did I miss the fight?
In truth, the only real blog worth reading is Splattermail. So this is all kinda like watching two bergies fight over the last dram of meths. Through my binoculars from my balcony in Fresnaye.
PS. Cape Town and Joburg both rock.
April 15th, 2005 at 1:16 pm
I don’t see what all the fuss is about and if anybodies defining sites this site seems more like a forum to me.
April 17th, 2005 at 3:49 pm
Starfish is bread! I hope it dies with all the other Aids victims!! Although not that slowly.
April 17th, 2005 at 3:51 pm
Oh Sorry I thought we were talking about that, in that case I hope Jo’Blog does the same.
April 17th, 2005 at 8:51 pm
What do all Cape Townians under 30 have in common? They are all from Bloemfontein…. Durban kindly invites all Gautengers to spend all THAT cash (that is so sadly lacking in Bloem by the sea) at our shores… the weeds good and the water is actually warm!
April 17th, 2005 at 11:19 pm
I guess this loooong arguement comes down to one thing for me: who defines what BEST means.
Is best the site who employs the most beguiling tricks to draw an audience. Is best the site who therefore has a higher hit-rate. Is best the site that can convince it’s readers to vote for it since they love to see the trash they regularly serve. Is best a well-thought-out load of shallow entertainment that feeds our wish for easy viewing but hardley ever any real thinking. Is best the ability to appeal to a particular target market for particular reasons. It’s certainly clever…and entertaining. But what … really … does BEST mean?
In my opinion, BEST is something that appeals to well-read, intelligent thinkers who are provided with the means/opportunity to comment on what they get served up/told on the site. BEST is a site that has a wide range of reader-appeal. And best is not out to sift as much trash that it can find and when that well runs dry, to mouth off about personal offenses that strongly support an arrogance fitting to one who thinks the Cape Town sun was designed to shine only for his pleasure.
I’m a Capetonian and I read 2Oceans about once every 2 weeks. I don’t consider it a blog as it does not smell to me like anyone’s personal life story or views but instead smacks strongly of a commercial venture that is seldom even amusing. I was disappointed to see it win as I saw the tactics used to drum up voter support and I didn’t enjoy what I saw. I’m intrigued to find a competing site taking 2Oceans on since there would obviously be a huge outcry from the voters who got the winners into place in the first instance.
But what was said sure needed to be said!!!
April 18th, 2005 at 10:34 am
It amazes me what personal egos can do… I suggest you build a bridge, and get over it Jo’blog. Go and hug someone and let it all out.
April 18th, 2005 at 11:15 am
Hey JJ, how about you build a personality and some intellect. And then Fuck off, none the Less.
Bye now JJ, bye!

April 18th, 2005 at 1:26 pm

April 18th, 2005 at 4:23 pm
I’m sorry. I just have to. Especially after the previous couple of “my chirp is better than your chirp” comments.
“Arguing on the Internet is like running in the Paralympics – even if you win, you’re still a retard.”
April 18th, 2005 at 6:13 pm
Yawn
April 19th, 2005 at 7:32 am
some “people” out there need to get lives….
christ!
April 19th, 2005 at 11:35 am
pointing out that an fellow competitor does not fulfil the criteria of an unpublished specification should be done at the start of the competition. Or, in fact at any time prior to the counting of the votes and the announcement of the winners.
Levelling the accusation after the award has been made looks distincly like a case of poor sportsmanship or of being a sore loser. It also makes you look rather similar to a three year old thrashing around on the floor in a supermarket screaming “but i want it, i want it. not fair.”
However valid the original complaint may have been, all that really stands out is the toddler temper tantrum.
oh, and fuckwat: spot on.
April 19th, 2005 at 3:42 pm
I could really get into this blog culture thingy..a new one for me.
A tired topic I’m sure…but I’m also sure there are a lot of people that check back here every day to see what’s been said. So a last word may never be reached
Firstly, fuckwat’s remark is in REALLY poor taste and totally irrelevant to the original posting that started this whole debate. If people wanted to post petty comments and start a fight between sites, does that mean the original posting was invalid. Gurgle, Rich starts out pointing put himself, and even titling his post with the point you’re making. He’s not unaware of what it can look like … sour grapes was said with a wry grin. I salute him for that and yet with still having the conviction that he had a point to make.
Perhaps the time was to voice an objection before the voting was closed. At the same time, perhaps no-one gave it that much thought as up till then, no-one had paid much attention to what 2Oceans was al about. But it’s certainly valid after the event to say “hey guys…for next time..what really defines a blog.”
April 19th, 2005 at 4:11 pm
My thoughts exactly Jax.
Thanks…!
April 19th, 2005 at 7:30 pm
jax: we seem to be pretty much on the same page when it comes to the awards and the comments, and it’s time to drop the whole shebang anyway. so no more from me there.
But, regarding your comment about fuckwat’s: I agree it had nothing to do with the original post, I was under the impression that he/she/it/thingymabob was commenting on the behaviour of the various previous comments and the general trend that the thread appeared to be taking. And regarding that, it was right on the money. I’m just waiting for Godwin’s Law to kick in, and then it really will be over.
Regarding the supposed poor taste of his comment, I can’t remember the exact quote or to whom to attribute it to, but it goes something like this, we must either learn to laugh at life what brings or just sit down and start crying. I feel that black humour’s an expression of that sentiment, and perfectly appropriate.
Obviously I’ve assumed here that you thought that the commentators flippant attitude to the extreme, life altering challenges that face Paralympics competitors somehow denigerates them and all their efforts. I just see it as a way of try to make the demons that haunt us in this life look a little less scary.
But that’s just my pov. Feel free to disagree. Hell call me names. Come one. I dare you. At least it will make for a change from the rest of the dross in the comment.

April 19th, 2005 at 8:57 pm
I can’t say a little off-centre humour really bothers me, in fact, I found it quite amusing the first time it was posted by coda last week here:
http://www.joblog.co.za/2005/04/my_dearest_seth.html#comments
Better late than never mate…!
April 20th, 2005 at 1:34 am
I get it that the quote was aimed at the guys who started the petty name-slinging etc.I did overlok the reference and was strongly defending whatI picked up to be a first-class topic that went south. I still dislike the black humour. Don’t believe in calling homosexuals faggots either, nor sex-workers whores. But it happens. To me though, a retard has to do with mental capacity. Para-olympics stretches far wider. I did notice the quote was posted somewhere else on Joblog too. Doesn’t make it any less of a sick quote to me.
April 20th, 2005 at 1:37 am
I forgot to add (as I forget to spell-check) … would you explain Godwin’s Law?
April 20th, 2005 at 8:52 am
yea, well, hmm, sorry, did not mean to offend anyone.
I did not refer to the whole thread, just the direction that the thread was taking.
And i promise i have nothing against para-olympic athletes
There is a huge difference in debating a point on the internet and arguing about silly shit and throwing names around, and just always thought that quote puts, or should put that into perspective.
Godwin’s Law :
“Godwin’s law (also Godwin’s rule of Nazi analogies) is an adage in Internet culture that was originated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states that:
As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one.
There is a tradition in many Usenet newsgroups that once such a comparison is made, the thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. In addition, whoever points out that Godwin’s law applies to the thread is also considered to have “lost” the battle, as it is considered poor form to invoke the law explicitly. Godwin’s law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups. Many people understand Godwin’s law to mean this, although (as is clear from the statement of the law above) this is not the original formulation.”

Fuckwat
Although you seem to be sincere in your post above, I struggle to believe a person who has an email address like yours did not mean to offend anyone – i.e. you@fuckoff.com? Also nice alias, or is Fuckwat your real name. If not, maybe it should be.
April 21st, 2005 at 10:39 am
What the fuck has that got to do with anything. If the username offends you, or the 10 year old quote, then I will quote again:
“Hey JJ, how about you build a personality and some intellect. And then Fuck off, none the Less.
Bye now JJ, bye!
Posted by: HighHorse”
Obviously that’s not a real email address.
The damn thing does not allow you to comment without entering one. Just thought it will go nicely with my username of the week.
Notice how I never through any names your way, I could have easily called you a small dicked wanker or questioned your sexual preference, or even called you a fuckwat (does that actually mean anything?).
April 21st, 2005 at 12:31 pm
Hey Fuckwat,
What the fuck you dragging me into this for?
fight your own fucking battles you little girl!!
April 21st, 2005 at 3:09 pm
What amazes me is that when we are all behind the security of pseudonyms on the net we get all aggressive and boisterous like heros and villans. In reality however how many fights or arguments do you see in open society every day (bar crime) between strangers – not many, as there you have to face your “enemy” and the real blows that follow. So – no need in acting all tough guys. We all know we are not. No need in replying saying “but I am tough” as you will never be able to prove it, unless you plan to have a “meet me behind the car park after 6″ scenario.
As with your naming convention – seems I struck a nerve there. You are quite right though in that it is just a name after all, so please go ahead and be a Fuckwat all you like.
April 22nd, 2005 at 8:53 am
Why don’t you rather call me out on the obvious spelling mistake?
I really don’t care if you call me a fuckwat, or a real fuckwat, or the fuckwat, or any other thing related to fuckwat, because just as much as it wont make me any better calling you names, it does not make you any better calling me names.
So please make the next one your last comment about me or my name or my intelligence and let’s stop this madness, because this has nothing to do with what a blog is, or who should win, or who’s a sore loser, or why the world spins or any fuckin thing whatsoever.
April 22nd, 2005 at 11:00 am
and the tension is mounting…..
slight bit of bitterness there hey fuckwat
April 22nd, 2005 at 11:22 am
Bitterness?
About being called a fuckwat?
I called myself that to start with. I think you are taking me far to serious.
Please explain where you pick that up.
