My dearest Seth,
Posted by Rich...! under Uncategorized on April 14 2005 at 2:54 PMThank you so much for all the traffic, we’re using our hit counter as a fan at the office.
My my, aren’t the minions vocal, alas what they lack in intellect and the ability to address the actual issue, they sure make up for in passion. Indeed, I’m in absolute awe, you could invade a small country with that much cannon-fodder, they’re truly adorable.
Sadly though, they seem to prove my point.
Glancing at your lovelys’ links I see that they’re all, bar two, email addys and not blogs. You see, I was never arguing about your content , you’re without a doubt a far better writer than I, I was simply saying that in the spirit of things, you’re not a blog, a fact I still believe.
You have readers, we don’t, we form part of a larger community. You tell stories, we dont, we start and participate in conversations.
Conversations and community = blogging
What I have seen from the feedback though, is that your readers are obviously keen to show their support, why not give them that chance on your website? Why not let them have their say? You talk about not having the time, and various technical reasons for not giving it a go, but I assure you, you could maintain the integrity of your site structure and still be up and running within a day or two.
Still you may be right, tell you what, here’s a challenge for you: add a feed, add comments and add permalinks, and if no-one uses them, I will happily, and publicly admit defeat.
With respect,
Richard Mulholland

Wow. I took a look at the “blog”. There definitely is something to the theory that the mountain addles people’s minds.
Personally, I believe you are lowering yourself by entering into a debate with the proprietor of the site, whose values and whose view of the world are nowhere more tellingly expressed than in this little gem of a disclaimer:
“Seth will never accept any freebies or sponsorship of anything unless he believes it suits the 2oceansvibe lifestyle.”
It’s about time Cape Town declared itself an independent republic, because it is abundantly clear that a good percentage of the people who live there have already seceded from reality.

How’s that saying go…
“Arguing on the internet is like running in the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you’re still retarded.”

Haha, touche…!

i hope this page doesn’t get as hectic as the other one, just wanted to say, the reason 2oceansvibe got the award was that he has more readers who voted than any other site/blog. The reason that he has more readers is that the 95% of net users who don’t use feeds, who just bookmark sites they like, go to sites whose content they enjoy. So if you want to pick up the R20 next year, relax on the definitional hair-splitting and write shit that makes us laugh.

A lot of the blogs that competed aren’t even as old as 2Oceans Vibe. My money says that syndication is likely to drive up the figures for these site sa lot more and 2Oceans won’t repeat its fortune next year.
If it is nominated, which I’ll oppose. Yes, it is a ‘journal’, but the definition of a blog has evolved a bit since then. As I said in anotehr comment, the car of the year these days should at least have power steering and wipers. You can have a car without those, but it would never win. It shouldn’t even qualify.
It’s good that they won, but this issue needs to be adressed. 2Oceans is busy splitting hairs – they are actively trying to convince us that pretty much any site on the web can qualify as a blog. In that case we should allow forum boards to also participate, because they are essentially multi-user blogs.
Get permalinks, RSS, comments – something! Anything that makes 2Oceans seem like more than an HTML file with dates.

Haha Damien, you said what I was going to…
And Rich…!, you also pointed out the e-mail addy issue before I could – I didn’t, because I was worried about getting accused of being a techie loser all over again… sigh.
But with all this over now: Shotgun on nominating Slashdot in advance for next year

soois – I’m all for supporting a blog that supports National Cleavage Day. If the Jo’bloggers want to work in the funny I’ll send them a pic of my cleavage.

I missed the fight. Its like school all over again. I ALWAYS miss the fight.

National Cleavage Day isn’t being taken nearly as seriously as it should be. I went off to work trembling with boyish excitement… and i SWEAR some girls were wearing polonecks. How rude.

The Blog Conundrum: What is a blog?
I’ve posted about this topic before and I’ll repeat several points I’ve made before in the course of this site or comments on other sites. But considering the amount of noise on the topic, a little clarity might be useful. This all ties back to the cur…

I’m still fumbling my way through some of SA’s most renowned blogs, trying to find one which is of genuine interest and/or inspiration to me. Perhaps it was just bad timing that i was forced (RSS) into this jo’blog vs 2oceans debarkle, but i feel i must just say one thing. If this is the kind of material that future/potential bloggers are exposed to – then this community will never become the revolutionary force that so many of it’s members believe it will do. It will simply fade and die. Coudos and props to cherryflava for steering well clear of this mess. Were they the only blokes who didn’t have their say? We should all just close the book.
