Too close to home to be ignored
Posted by Don under Uncategorized on June 27 2005 at 11:44 AM

* Up to 1.5 Million people affected
* 300,000 children had to quit school
* 46,000 arrested, fined or had their goods confiscated
* 6 people dead, four of whom were children
All because of Zimbabwe’s prez Mugabe. Operation Murambatsvina (Drive Out Trash) was the cause of the destruction of tens of thousands of shacks, street stalls and veggie gardens (which were planted by the poor in the time of food shortages), and the African Union doesn’t care.
Better still, this massive destructive task was carried out by none other than the Zim police.
Now Mugabe and his team are carrying out the next phase of their plan, Operation Garikai, or “Let us be settled and live at peace”, which aims to provide residential and business accommodation to deserving people.
Who deserves a home better than people who don’t have one?!? And now, after he’s destroyed so many, he gets to build people new ones and act like the hero. Oh, and he thinks he’ll have it all started up by the end of August.
Think he’s built a house before? It’s gonna take a lot longer than that my friend…
My best: “…the Government says 46,000 people have been arrested and crime has dropped by 20 per cent.” That’s because there’s nothing left to steal!
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is meeting with Mugabe so as to understand and appreciate what they are doing. If he leaves relieved, this world is more fucked up than I thought.

I grew up in Zimbabwe – I know the people. I keep wondering where/when/how this madness will end. Assassination? Total collapse? Will all the ordinary folk die out and leave the lucky few? It’s horrific – and leaves one feeling that one’s hands are tied…

also, there is good evidence of him doing this, because a large % of these people he is displacing from the cities do not support (or did not vote) for his tyranny. Given that his parties supporter base are rural dwellers.

Seriously, they should just Lee Harvey Oswald the bugger.
There’s the risk of martyrdom, of course, but I think it’s a fair bit better to be crying for Mugabe than bleeding for him.
Everyone inevitably looks back on these situations (Cambodia, anyone?) and says, “Someone should have done something!”. Well, it’s that time, people. And I’m willing. Just get me in there with Sidney Bristow and a big gun.

A big gun, or your big gun?
June 27th, 2005 at 2:43 pm
I’m not sure what the shocker is here.
Everybody know’s that the fucker is corrupt. Everybody knows that he is another African dictator in a long and not particularly proud tradition.
Maybe one day – somebody will become strong enough to take him out, but that is unlikely while all his corrupt buddies in other African governments (including South Africa) are supporting him….

What’s a boy to do…

Just get me Sidney, and I’m sure we can sort something out.

This one was going around in the days of sanctions, when I lived up north:
Two guys are waiting in the inevitable petrol queue, and have been for days. One guy says to the other, “I’m sick of this! We stand in queues for petrol and sugar, cooking oil and bread. I’ve had enough – I’m going to go kill Mugabe!”
“OK….,” says his friend sceptically, and off he goes.
A little while later he’s back. “What happened?” his friend asks.
“There’s a queue there too…”

Your question has been answered here: Think he’s built a house before?
June 27th, 2005 at 4:12 pm
Absolute madness. And that answers my question, they’ve been building the house for 5 years.
One house.
Thanks Sokwanele.

I’m still living here. Best country in the world and would like to stay here for a long time to come. Only problem is ….will they allow me? Such a shame to see this place go to waste. There is a lot more problems than housing and petrol. But surprise to all in SA. Come live here and get use to it…..it is coming to you sooner than you think. All the signs are there. Look at your sport like rugby…fire arms…farms….

That’ll be the day.
We won’t let it. Full stop. And yes, that’s a threat to evil, complacency, injustice and loserdom in general.

Hi Martin. I saw that you replied to my post. U’r take on it was ” We won’t let it. Full stop.”. The problem is that none of these people are going to do it over night. Just remember that one thing Africa is known for is time. They will start very slowly and take away all that is important to you. Over the last 22 years these guys slowly took away the freedom of speech, freedom of expression,…. association. They push slowly and if they do it one small thing at a time you don’t even realise it. No white SA are going to the Army ! How will they fight a war in the next 10 – 15 years?

Over the last 22 years these guys slowly took away the freedom of speech, freedom of expression,…. association. They push slowly and if they do it one small thing at a time you don’t even realise it. No white SA youngsters are going to the Army ! How will they fight a war in the next 10 – 15 years? Here they started by taking away firearms slowly by allowing one firearm per person. People never saw that as a prolem untill they needed it. Then they realised that they had no chance. The more you accept the changes, to keep the peace, the less you’ve got to offer to uphold the peace. Why was no shots fired when the farm invations started ?. Yet, Zimbabweans (Black and White ) are the most enduring people I’ve met in my 39 years. When all is said and done…we will still be here. I’ve read a piece the other day that said, When we are down to nothing….God is up to something. He wants us to see the invisible, believe in the incredible, and the we will receive the impossible. How true is that ?
