Happy-ish Halloween!
Posted by Don Packett under Uncategorized on November 1 2005 at 3:38 PM
Yes, we’ve just finished with Halloween… and I’m a little disappointed.
In my opinion, this is by far the most underrated holiday of the year. Especially in this country (case in point: I’m blogging this one day late). What’s the deal?
Christmas: Socks, meat and forced-family get-togethers
Easter: Low-cost chocolate and rodents
New Years Eve: Half-arsed spatterings of fireworks, booze, loneliness and booze
Halloween: Getting to dress up, the best parties you’ll see all year, chocolate and sweets (‘treats’), causing trouble (‘trick’), skulls, pumpkins, Rocky Horror songs, punch, etc.
And yet very few people take advantage of this opportunity. Even though it is in many ways preferable to the more conventional and bromidic celebrations! I mean, what’s cooler: a fat chimneysweep in his jammies, or being surrounded by ghosts, devils, ghouls and witches? I know – no contest. And there’s a fairly literal argument as to which even has more ‘spirit’.
Next year, I wanna see decorations everywhere, not just in Cardies and party shops, and I want the whole country to come to work that day dressed up. Let’s make All Hallows Eve something to look forward to! As we did yesterday. For those who put some effort in, I salute you.

Dave, you cannot seriously believe that Halloween can even be put on the same pedestal as Christmas or Easter, man those are sacred days of remebrance that we need to uphold, they represent an important part of our human heritage and are pretty much all we have left to say there really is and was ‘spiritual’ good in man! Trying to affirm negative impressions on these days of remebrance is wrong, i’d like to say the majority actually enjoy sometime off work to spend with family and reflect on their true self – not needing to disguise who they are! Watch out for rooting too much for the dark side man, it truley just wants to hurt you and spit you out. I’m sure you mean’t some of this stuff in good humour and it’s really all about shits and giggles but some words of wisdom have said…
“When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” 1 Corinthians 13:11
In the name of Christ (by the way which has almost completely been dropped out of the …..mas and been replaced with the X-mas and Happy holidays and Halloween is fast becoming one of the most popular holidays ever) i just don’t see celebration in the darkness of a virtual hell that cool?

Not to get all controversial here, but INOC, look into the history of Christmas and Easter and I think you’ll find that they were based on pagan days, just like Halloween. You need to lighten up a bit too.
(Like most religious quotes, this was taken out of context, he was talking about speaking in tongues)
“When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” 1 Corinthians 13:11
Poor bloke that wrote that doesn’t know what he’s missing…!

Darkness of a virtual hell? That sounds super.
No, really. I am being serious. Religeous contexts aside, Halloween is way more fun. Dressing up does not classify as ‘disguising you you are’, but an expression of who you are. Besides, how much of Christmas and Easter these days is even about Christ? Not much. At least Halloween is honest. And it’s not like it’s a celebration of evil, if that’s where you were going with that. Well, at least not yet (mwah ha hahahha!)…
In addition, please refrain from the use of biblical quotes as weapons.

One can interpret biblical quotes as you like, i found the relevance for what i was expressing and by reading i’m sure one got what i mean’t, sorry it’s one way for you…
” ……an expression of who you are. ”
Exactly Dave, we are celebrating that we are murderers, rapists and the devils minions, then you wander why so many around us celebrate like this everyday by destroying our lives through acts of violent crime? Just a thought we reap what we sow, i know it’s not that fun but how else are we going to be of better influence?
Lots of questions? who knows.

No dude, you cant go around quoting things out of context and then say that’s just your interpretation, (if you go back to earlier editions of the bible it is clear that the passage refers to the actual babbling sound when speaking in tongue, and not behaviours as such, accusing someone of acting “childish” is a sin in itself, and is extremely subjective.)
If that was the case you could (and obviously do) use the bible to justify just about anything.
Shit, and don’t go blaming murder on Halloween, if you can do that, you can blame it on your bible too:
“…eye for an eye” Exodus 21:24…!

Spare us the rantings us self-righteous religious nutheads, who deign to cast judgement on other people’s beliefs or lack thereof. I don’t think Halloween has ever caused a war, but religion certainly has. Just ask the born-again religious nuthead who runs the USA…

I was originaly just going to post comment on how I too wish Halloween was bigger and better in this country but after reading the comments…well, I have to agree with Travis. If you look at almost 90% of the wars in this world, they are all due to religion. Anyway, who cares.
The point is Halloween needs to be bigger and better. It’s the only holiday I can’t wait for. Christmas and easter come and go (not fast enough though) but Halloween. Man, we’ve had some killer halloween parties at the Nile Crocodile in Pretoria. This year was alright but nothing brilliant.
But it’s the usual story…people in South Africa just have no passion for anything…music, holidays, art, movies…no one here cares. Everything has to be delivered to them, in their own living rooms nog-all!
Halloween is and will be the only holiday I ever celebrate.
On that topic…make sure you check out both of Rob Zombie’s movies – “House of 1000 Corpses” and his latest one “The Devil’s Rejects”. Awesome.
I guess I better go murder someone now

Actually Rich you’re not very good at the quoting from the bible thing either cos the whole eye for an eye thing took a turn when a son called Jesus said: ” You have heard that it was said, ‘ An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ “But i tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him also…….” Matt 5:31
Stop this crap with blaming true relised relationships with God as a cause for war, what on earth is your justification? People of true belief cannot commit these actions it against Gods will, they’re riding the popularity linked with it. Come on it’s ignorance and greed that causes war. Pick your scape goats carefully.
And if your idea of a good time is watching a bunch of perverse hillbillies ripping the shit out of each other, you’re in for a real great time when that’s played back over and over again while you sit at a bottom of a rather small black pit and you’re the lead actor victim and all!? It just bad stuff man, doesn’t matter how strong a person you think you are, its killing off something in you.
Hope you at least try and seem some point out of this, God bless fellow man.

Dude, I know I didn’t quote the bible well, that was s’posed to be my point.
Now, wake up, sheesh what do you call the crussades? Regardless of the political motivation, men fought and died for the true faith (on both sides, truth in this case is simply a matter of perspective).
Also, if your god would send someone to the pits of hell for eternity because they watch horror movies (as you imply) then he’s the kind of evil vindicitive god that I would never follow.
I’m all for religious freedom, but take your blinfold off every now and then…!

INOC, I don’t think you are being very fair about this. Have you ever heard of FREE WILL? Well it’s there for everyone, so back off and let us have our own opinions. Don’t judge. It’s not like you are God, you know.

My children…stop your fighting, stop your argueing. This is not meant to be. Forgive your brothers, forgive your sisters.
I feel that you all need some guidance. Being the ordained Reverend that I am, I invite you all to attend the church of rock-n-roll and be healed. Let me show you the light, let me show you all the truth.
Can I hear an “Amen”?
