There goes the neighbourhood
Posted by Rich...! under Uncategorized on November 27 2005 at 8:54 PMSheesh, so the other day I got acomment from Jason on my PVR post:
| Wow guys, my experience has been completely the opposite. Come on over to myPVR.co.za and see what I mean. http://www.mypvr.co.za |
I popped over to his blog to have a look, needless to say it looks a lot like faked out marketing rubbish, even the comments look contrived.
Go have a look, I’d like to know what you think.
In related news, if this kinda thing makes you want to vom, no worries, you have an alternative, TiVo (thanks to another comment on the afore-mentioned post).
Either way though, my problem remains. There’s nothing I really want to record…!

The thing that grates me about the pvr affair is that the cost of the product is ridiculous…it is a glorified hard drive, with some custom software.
We have had a home brew pvr running in our lounge for some time, thanks to http://www.mythtv.org and linux. For the cost of hardware (which i getting so cheap I could wave a stick), and some configuration time you are set to do everything that the stupid dstv guy does, in fact, even better equipped, because mythtv lets you interact with xml based tv schedules, etc. off the net, you can have your box connected to the net and be able to set recording options while you are at work, etc.
I am pretty sure there must even be a distro that allows you to drop a cd into your drive and instant-pvr any box…

Hilarious! The “blog” is as transparent as a piece of cling-wrap – and about as interesting to look at, too. When will companies learn that you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people on the Internet?

A coza whois* on mypvr turns up 2degrees as the registrant. 2degrees.co.za is also owned by same**, but redirects to a dial-direct page…

Guys, seriously, you have too much time on your hands
All these conspiracy theories … and all of them in the wrong direction.
Believe it or not, I AM a normal guy. I have nothing to do with multichoice other than loving the pvr they produced. YES, I love TV. YES, I said some nice things about them in my blog. NO, I’m not being paid. AND NO, I’m not trying to suck up. This is one of many blogs I’ve written before – this time, I like the product. Last time, I had a terrible time with Penguin Pools, and look what happened: http://www.supersmart.co.za/blog.php.
Next time, give a guy the benefit of the doubt. And the offer still stands: if you live in Cape Town, come say hi.

Just noticed that you use Goldfish for web design/development. So do I for one of my companies. Next time you’re speaking to Fran, ask her how much Jason has to do with Multichoice …
