Yesterday I delivered a VHS tape to a client. Being one of those rainy days that I love so much, I had to protect the tape under my zip-up jersey.
So in I walk, wet from the rain, my left hand holding the tape under the right side of my jersey, not realising, that I look like a thug about to pull out his shooter and pop a cap in the secretary’s ass!
I’d forgotten to remove the tape from beneath my jersey, right up until I stood in front of the woman, who was clearly, as I remember now, ready to activate the emergency button and duck under the table.
Silly me.

| Upgrade (as in “better”) v.: to improve, esp. something that was old or outdated; “I’ve upgraded my computer so I can run better software.” “The company upgraded their personnel” |
MTN subscribers will be aware of MTN’s recent upgrade to their voicemail system.
Now you may or may not know that with the old system, you could dial 111 (as opposed to 100) to hear just the messages without any of the IVR gumph – very cool. Sadly, this feature is no longer available with the upgrade.
I also find the new even more nasal voice prompt, kicking of with a dull and lifeless “Y’ello!” to be anything but better.
So I called the customer care line and asked them about this, they confirmed that I could no longer use the 111 service, but assured me happily that the number itself still works – it’s just the service that doesn’t.
Giving them the benefit of the doubt I asked then what new features I can expect to see with the new system. To which she replied, “Well there’s nothing new really, it just allows us to cope with a larger subscriber base.”
So to confirm then, according to MTN:
| Upgrade (as in “better for us”): v.: to downgrade services to our existing subscribers, thus allowing us to increase our subscriber base/proffits. “We’ve just upgraded our voicemail systems”. |
Best hope they never upgrade the rest of their services…!

Earlier, on an SAA flight from Durban to Jo’burg:

So, let me just get this straight. Here’s an industry that will confiscate your nail scissors before you’re allowed to board an aircraft, but they have no problem letting you get on with a device that, “may interfere with the navigation systems.”
WTF?
Conscientious travellers have been advised to be on the lookout for angry, cartoon wielding, middle-eastern passengers carrying iPods…!
Update: Left in the comments. courtesy of the BigGuy:
Here’s an update for you on the interference with flight systems. You’ll like this one.
Last week, I was called into a meeting to design a new mobile telephony thingy that was all very hush-hush. Turns out that what I was designing was a way to use your cell-phone opn planes. The aircraft in essence becomes a roaming network, and so they charge you more than you would have been charged to phone from your home country, with the airline pocketing the extra cash. Sounds great, doesn’t it?
I sat down with some of the airline guys afterwards, and guess what changes they are making to the planes to ensure that there is no danger? My guesses were extra insulation on the wiring, or at least comprehensive testing of a number of phones.
The real answer – nothing. The electronics on the planes are already so well sheilded that there are no changes needed. Turns out all that was needed was for there to be some money in it for the airlines…

Obviously, we’re working late here again. But, trust me, it was very funny at the time.
Thanks, Wolf for the action shot, and putting himself through that horrible ordeal for humour’s sake.

“Today will be the day
to start rising up and fighting back
from this moment on
we will live our lives with open hearts and open eyes”
These are the intro lyrics to Story Of The Year’s ‘Our Time Is Now’. After the last 24 hours I’ve had, it’s the only thing that’s keeping me going. Well, this and a crazy Portuguese Malawian. Mad changes and alterations to two separate jobs, 2 hours sleep, no petrol, a broken car window, a stolen CD wallet as well as other people’s things that were in my car had this man feeling very grumpypants this morning. Then the Portuguese Malawian told me to forget all that crap, play my theme song and get on with what I need to do.
I want to curse the hell out of the thieves especially, but I know they’ll get what’s coming to them.
So the point of this post? No point. Just letting you all know that whatever the fuck happens, there’s no reversing it.
Pick up, carry on, and know evryting gwan be irie from here on out. And if you happen to see a really cool collection of CD’s hit your local Cash Converters, please give me a holler so I can buy them all back. Ta.

“An outbreak of diarrhoea in Bloemhof is feared to spill into surrounding areas”
Spill. Hehe. Story here, although that’s really all you need to know.

When we last left Dan, he had triumphed over the Stubbelon. This time, however, his challenge was a little different.
Dan was invited to a charity event one Friday evening. He had been to a few of these before, but this time the venue had changed. Being the cool, chilled, yet stylish guy he was, Dan took his brick shithouse physique to this new venue arriving in cargo shorts, only to be told he wasn’t allowed in because he wasn’t wearing longs. To set the scene, the event was at a dodgy little pub in what we would today classify as the East Rand, really no need for dress code. What bugged Dan even more was that he was there to give his money away freely to help kids with AIDS. Now these kids are at least R100 short (that was the entry fee) because some high and mighty shmuck thinks that his pub needs to keep the riff raff out. Um… Hello? By charging R100 at the door, you’re already keeping the scum out of your precious little bar. And it’s not like I, I mean, Dan, had grease-stained PT pants on either. They were very smart grey cargo’s, a little past the knee, so more like long-shorts than short-shorts.
It boggled Dan’s mind how something as insignificant as shorts, which people wouldn’t really see because the place was quite full, would have such an impact on taking food out of little AIDS orphans’ mouths. Shame on them (the pub people, not the kids).

As I’m sure most of you will have noticed we have been experiencing a few difficulties with TypePad and our hosts to try and get IP’s/DNS’s/whatever else to link to the right places. Anyway after being down for long enough we decided to move from TypePad to WordPress. We still need to import all our posts from TypePad, but hopefully all should be back to normal in a few days.
Thanks for sticking around.
UPDATE : Please could you change your RSS feeds for Jo’blog to point to :

ANOTHER UPDATE : Finally got all our old posts imported (Thanks QuickSilver!)
