Um…
Posted by Don Packett under Uncategorized on March 22 2006 at 2:42 PMSo I think I might have almost been scammed. Or not. You tell me.
A guy from England phoned me up and said he was from some web hosting company, and they were concerned with an applicant choosing a name similar to my site. They didn’t have the same company name, but the domain name was very similar, adding either a hyphen in between the name, or an ‘sa’ at the end. I couldn’t hear what this dude was saying so he transfered me to their legal department, a nice lady called Laura answered.
So I said “If they’re a plumbing company that’s fine, they can use it with pleasure”, but Laura then told me that they do video production.
Wait.
A.
Minute.
Some random company, with a company name not similar to mine, but wanting a similar domain name? Are they trying to steal my business? Or possible clients? Are they trying to steal my identity? Or was I almost the shmuck who paid £200 to secure a domain name so these punks don’t get it?
I typed in two URL’s that she told me she went to to see their site, but got nothing.
Like I said, you tell me.

Methinks you may be right. I’ll keep checking the URL’s to see if they do actually eventually work. I’ll keep you posted.

Sounds like a serious attempt to extort some cash from you – why not register the name in the UK for a couple of pound ?

Dude, def a scam, they called Kim from eventworx too (I think it was her) she then regged the domains herself and the woman, from UK, went off threatening to sue. Kim told her effectivley to fuck off, and that was the end of it.
Besides the fact that you aint a web business, people that want to hire you will do so oon the recommendation of others. Tell her to take a hike…!

Scammed most definitely. And I agree with Billy: send her a picture of your [enlarged?] knob.

Def a scam. It’s the third time I’ve heard of this scam, exactly the same lines being used etc. It’s totally a scam.

Now for the reverse effect: Even if they do register similar URL’s to yours, you can actually take it from them if you can prove that you had the initial URL and they’re infringing on copyright or implying that it is the same company. It happened to us and the other 2 URL’s got signed over to us. We gave our lawyer a bottle of red for his trouble. Sorted.

(continued) To verify your identity please tell us you ID number. Huh? You called ME! If you’re the bank then you know my ID.
NEVER give your details out over the phone, people, it’s called phishing, and the next step is having your identity stolen, credit cards issued in your name but being used by people with expensive tastes…
