Spotted at a shoot yesterday in Pretoria.
It’s not just the fact that they know the lift is broken, and would rather get a sign made than actually fix it, but also that they say “BEWARE!” instead of making you feel a bit more comfy with a word like “CAUTION”, or maybe “HEY GUYS, RATHER USE THE STAIRS”.

It’s very difficult to measure the level that elevators will stop on due to varying loads. So, sometimes if the lift is very loaded, it will stop slightly lower than when it is less loaded. It’s pretty much common place on all lifts, these people probably just made a sign telling people about it.
The lift is, most probably, not broken. Think about it.

Cute thing is that if you change your reading or vocal inflection, the sign could also warn that it sometimes stops off, level, and the default is that it doesn’t. Don’t ya jes’ LOVE the English language?

Does anybody know how far the lift stops off-level? I understand the minor fluctuations in load, but I was once on a lift that stopped 3 feet too low, and climbing out of that was a tricky opperation – not to mention the confidence factor (in future use of the lift).
The scariest one – though is that in Germany, in the older buildings (the ones that weren’t flattened by Bomber Harris and his friends), you can still find old ‘Padenoster’ lifts. In essence they’re wooden boxes that are open at the front, and do circuits of the building. Our office in germany has one. You’re not allowed to build new ones, because they contravine European health and safety laws…
Taking that is a real test of courage…
