A suspected thief asked the court to help him with money for transport on Thursday, but quickly backtracked when the magistrate offered to place him in custody so he wouldn’t have to worry about getting to court.

On the other hand imagine the guy is innocent.
Many of us have employees who are from rural areas but live in Joburg for work. Everytime they travel home, the taxi fare almost cripples them (e.g. Joburg-Tzaneen is about R175).

The guy would be an idiot living in Tzaneen and working in JHB it would take more than 5 hours to travel to work each day, never mind the cost, oh its crappy JHB traffic add another 3 hours

I once got a big speeding fine that I couldn’t afford to pay, and ended up going to court to try and see if I could get an extension.
The guy before me was asked by the magistrate if he was contesting the fine, and he said that he wasn’t. The magistrate then asked him why he hadn’t paid the fine, and he told the magistrate that he didn’t have the money.
The magistrate did a very classy ‘If the state pays for your accomodation for the enxt 3 months, would that help you find the money to pay the fine?’
The poor guy went ashen, and promised the magistrate that he had actually brought the money with him, and would pay atraight away…
Of course this left me with my sphincter acting like the sphincter of a fish-eagle just before it pops a power dive, and I absolutely didn’t have the money to pay the fine. Fortunately, when my case came up, and they called the cop that had issued the fine, he wasn’t in court. The happy result was that my fine was dropped, and the cop was charged with Contempt of Court.

Was going to email you but thought I would be original. This is just to say thanks for having me at the link and putting up with me taggging along for two days. I really had a great time and learnt a shit load from my experience. Please tell the guys at the link I say wats up.
