TV stuff
Posted by Rich...! under Uncategorized on September 20 2006 at 9:00 PMI just saw this rad ad for an SABC show on conspiracy theories form an Amercan site of all places.

Nice!
On the topic of TV. …/Ant and I were just discussing TV Licenses. I pay mine on a debit order, but was wondering why I bother the other day. Seems he was thinking the same thing.
Here’s the deal:
- Neither of us own a TV
- We both use projection systems
- They have no TV receiver
- We have DSTV which we pay for separately
Why should we pay for a license for a service we ain’t getting? They wouldn’t sell …/Ant a DVD player the other day because he didn’t have his license with him, that seems silly to me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the cost that bothers me, it’s the principle.
Then, on the topic of TV Licenses and Ads, remember this errr, gem of an ad?
“The right thing to do.” pffft, I’ve got a tag line for ‘em
Pay your TV license or we’ll broadcast this ad again…!

Why don’t they go to a cable network, that way if you want S.A.B.C. then you pay for it to be opened if not then you just watch your DVD’s or DSTV or whatever. The only reason is they know there programming is shit and you have to pay for it anyway. They have reruns on all the time (Dallas) because it’s already been paid for and they can make more money off of it . Wait for Hotel, Knight Rider, A-Team and Macgyver to come back. Hey at least the last three would be a vast improvement on Dallas

Well Tack, you need to understand that not everyone can afford a cable service, so for the vast majority of South Africans, paying the small TV License fee is about as much as they\’d be able to spend.
I don\’t think SABC is as bad as you say it is either, there\’s a shit tonne of original, local content that is great for most South Africans. My domestic sits down in front of DSTV, she knows how to channel surf, but she prefers SABC 1 and 2, and she\’s far more indicitave of the population that you or I.
Dude, I loved Hotel.
PS, see you on Sunday, hope you\’re not having any jitters…!

As I understand it, the “TV” license is actually more of a “broadcasting” license, because it goes towards funding governing and regulation of all broadcasting in SA (including Multichoice, who also have to abide by ICASA’s rules).
I think it’s simple really: if they called it a Broadcast License, half the population wouldn’t know what they’re talking about!

Sure Martin.
Although a few million people x a tv licence fee is a substantional lot of money just for regulating.

I just love the way SABC decided that people will pay their license if you have lasers and robots. Oh, and “It’s the right thing to do” is correct. It’s just a lot MORE right for them than for you.

Oh, please God, let them bring back MacGuyver…

TV Tax is a more appropriate name.
The concept of it flies in the face of freedom and democracy. Even the official blurb (motivation) from the SABC themselves admits it – the purpose of the TV Licence is to fund the broadcast of non-market-demanded content!
In other words, they cannot raise revenue via advertising or in a pay-for-view manner because the market does not rate their content. So they use the law of the country to force people to pay for what they don’t want to watch.
That doesn’t sound like a pillar of a free society to me- the Government deciding what we should watch and forcing us to pay for it.
I am selling / destroying my television and buying an LCD monitor to watch rented DVDs. I will no longer fund this rubbish against my free will.

Go James. Burn that bra dude. But the question is this: do you think it’s true that E-tv commisioned a bunch of five year olds to write the script for Backstage? anyone who has ever seen the show (accidentally or otherwise) would find this probable. Think about it. Why pay script writers when you could hire toddlers for the price of a fizz-pop. That’s quality you can trust Johnson.

On the subject of SABC ripoffs etc.
I enquired today about getting my TV “denatured”
which means that I turn it into a monitor so that I dont’ have to pay a tv license.
So listen to this:
After having done this you have to pay the SABC R300 to send out one of their employees to come and confirm this.
Wait, it gets better. . . Then, every year, yes, every year therafter you have notify them, 3 months before the end of the year, that you are still not interested in a tv license.
Imagine paying McDonalds R300 for someone to come and see that you’re not eating their burgers at home. Then every year, until you die , you have to let them know that you are still not ineterested in their burgers.
What !!!!!????????
