A test
Posted by Don Packett under Uncategorized on February 27 2007 at 1:24 PMI don’t have any reason to think that this will actually make a difference. Pessimistic, maybe, so prove me wrong.
Got mailed this today:

I’d like to see if, firstly, there are more cars on the road with the lights switched on, and secondly, if it will make a difference.
Make people aware? For sure. But only the people that have seen or heard about this initiative, and they’re not really the people doing the crimes are they? Do you think criminals will have a change of heart or conscience when they see a car with the lights on during the day? Methinks not.
They tried the ‘switch your lights on to promote road safety’ a few years ago. Many people had their lights on, but did it reduce the number of road accidents or deaths? No really, I’m asking.
Good for STAND for actually putting something out there and making people aware, I just hope it helps, ‘cos all the news of late is really just bad news.

I’m with you, I can’t see the benefit of this.
The message is there, you read any broadsheet/website or watch any news channel today and you hear about daily crime, so maybe the message is causing the issue, people are tired of hearing about it or have become blasé about the whole thing.
As for “had ENOUGH” well lets look at it from the governments perspective; who gives a shit what white people think? they didn’t vote us in, so do we care?
I think one of the ministers summed it up nicely, if they don’t like it, leave!
The only way “law-abiding citizens” can make this government wake up is hit them where it hurts, stop PAYING TAX!
Thats right, firstly the courts system would collapse with the sheer volume of people being sued for non-payment of tax, secondly the people in power wouldnt be able to afford their bmw’s and mercs because the tax wasn’t being paid as usual.
Everyone moans about the crime, but at the end of the day its just a moan, has anyone actually decided to make it right?
silly little marketing campaigns with feelgood factors like this wont work, they never have done anywhere else in the world

Oh please…
Thabo’s waiting on the corner of Beyers Naudee and Judith Avenue counting how many people “have had enough”, and of course he is going to report back to cabinet so that THINGS can get done.
… ie this is a complete waste of my bulbs.

err…Dan..stop paying tax? think about it a little, dude. when everything falls to shit do you think crime will improve? nope. Do you think your money just gets used to pay for peoples BMW’s? c’mon man – thats a little closed minded.

urk:
so all the current solutions have worked in SA, the lights being turned on, radio messages, white people moaning? the silly websites “highlighting” the issues… i could go on.
Honestly, at what point do you count it asreally falling to shit? Civil war between the have’s and havenot’s?
Granted it’s harsh, but so is the crime rate. Drastic
times….
Let’s put it another way. Say annoyed citizens decide that they will take into account the amount of crime in their neighbourhood and reduce the amount of rates accordingly for the lack of policing, considering council rates help pay for the police.
You are paying for a service you aren’t getting, so why? Do you do the same when you goto woolies, buy steak and get horse? no, so why do south africans happily moan but not really do whats democratic?
Where did the 10 mill come from for dipshits wall? Private or public funded? How about the jets? How about the worlds trips?
Not exactly close minded when you see how the current administration has acted with the public purse. Lets face it, the ANC isn’t likely to be voted out so why should they fix the current climate of crime?
I grew up in JHB, you would never catch me living there again, i prefer the coast now as they don’t seem to have the crime plague like joey’s does, but im sure things will change.

I think if anything, this story sums up how the ANC and Thabo feels about crime:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/02/20/wbeeb120.xml
yup, SA is safe and anyone who says otherwise is being racist.
Now who’s operating with their mind closed?

It’s an interesting idea…not sure it will help to bringing it to the light. Anyway, I don’t need to look at headlights to see who’s fed-up with crime.
Everyone is…aren’t they?
Anyway, I’m not doing it – because:
1) I don’t really drive around alot anyway
2) It wasn’t part of the K53 I took
and lastly…
3) I might forget to switch my lights off again and get myself stranded (although in an ironic twist of fate dissabling my car to thieves even if temporarily)
Thanks for the heads-up though. When I see ppl drving like this I will not confuse them with a funeral procession or arrive alive folks.

two words: xenon lights and migraine!
I see no other significance unfortunately.

Now now lads! AA and other statistics have shown over many years that driving with your lights on during the day makes you way more visible. I’ve driven with my lights on in daytime for yonks. In the last year or two people have (finally!) ceased flashing me, thinking I’ve got ‘em on in error. So folk have acclimatised. The idea therefore of linking ‘lights on’ to ‘gatvol with crime’ is a teensy bit dof.

Just got mailed this today!
I reckon any initiative to do good should be supported whole-heartedly. Maybe it wont do any good but Im sure it wont do any bad either and it sure beats the likes of that tosser last year Neil Watson simply bitching about it!
Ive mailed it to everyone in my address book and I just hope that the 3 of them do the same!

And here I thought turning on the lights was to decrease the number of road accidents..
Or am I the only one who remembers the campaign last christmas.
Here I should end but saying something stupid and witless, like- bring back the death penalty that will stop crime
