Best South African iTrip frequencies
Posted by Rich...! under Uncategorized on February 25 2007 at 2:51 PM
When at home, I prefer hard-wired iPod car solutions like the Dension Ice Link (first prize) or the Harman Kardon Drive+Play (a not-quite-there second prize). However when traveling I rely on an FM transmitted solution, such as Griffin’s iTrip.
To date though, I’ve not found a good list of frequencies for SA, so I invariably farm around when I get to a place until I find one that works. Here’s my plan, either mail me or comment your fav frequencies and the area you’re in, and ‘ll update the list. No place is too obscure, and if you think your freq is better than that listed, let me know.
Jo’burg: 88.2
Cape Town: 88.8
Good listening…!

Rich, the lousy part of these frequencies (I find)is that they’re not silent. So any sound being transmitted through them must suffer from the inherent interference/hiss. Have you found the same thing?

Yeah Clive, it’s not ideal (fine for podcasts though) that’s why I prefer the hard-wired alternatives.
Oh and make sure that you have a powered one, my wife uses the roadtrip and loves it – it really is very good…!

105.7FM seems to work pretty well for me; except in the odd place around JHB. I used to use 106.0, but ever since 702 moved to that frequency it’s a tad noisy.
On a related note (hehe): Has anyone ever caught someone else’s tunes while sitting in traffic?
I have; but they had shit taste

Jhb : 106.1 worked for me in JHB, but when traveling in JHB CBD it got interference.

and in the South Coast I found 106.1 to be ok, but switched to 106.9. But I don’t like change, so I’m rather uncomfortable with the whole thing.

I gave up on my iTrip eventually because the interference drove me nuts. So I will try these frequencies..

I was also on the 106 kick until 702 booted us off the air. Have found 93.7 quite good, except over weekends when all the community stations switch on…

97.7 works between the midlands and JHB. As tested this past weekend to good effect.

The problem with all these Trip style devices is that they have to comply with FCC (American Broadcasting) regulations.
What you really want is a fuck-off big FM signal booster, and then you can be the broadcaster!

I have a RoadTrip and find that 91.9 is a decent frequency. There is still some background hiss when the volume is turned up louder than usual (by the time I get home my wife can hear the podcast inside the house – must be going a bit deaf). Without a doubt you get better sound quality if you can connect directly to your car radio using a cable. A couple car radio manufacturers either include the connection or you can buy a connector and have it fitted.

Yesterday I was driving, and my trusty iPod just stopped… When I looked at it, it had an unhappy face on the screen, and a url…
Turns out that my iPod has finally died. RIP little iPod. Hello shiny new black video iPod!

Aaah, dude! That sucks, I had that face once too, bye bye iPod…!
