One for the kids…
Posted by Rich...! under Uncategorized on February 22 2007 at 1:17 AMI really hate it when you ask people whether or not they want to have kids, and they reply with one of these two platitudes:
- “Oh, I’d never want to bring a child into the world today.”
- “Oh, I won’t raise a child in this bloody country.”
Blah blah blah. Take your tired cliches elsewhere.
Then I read today’s (just today’s) IOL feed:
- Two boys raped an brutally assaulted
- Search for missing Pretoria girl continues
- Four boys killed in family murder/suicide
- 20-month-old baby locked inside a scorching hot car
- Newborn baby kidnapped
- Pool deaths prompt by-laws (you mean there are none already?)
It really fucking sucks!
Still, I’ll take my chances.
It’s well worth it…!

Heh! What a cute kid!
See, the thing is… sure there’s lots of crime and shit, but are we really that affected by it?
I’ve stayed in South Africa all 23 years of my existence and I’ve never experienced crime. I might be a minority but let’s be real, crime is concentrated into very small areas in this country.
Well, that’s how I see it anyway; one day I’ll take my chances too…

Ah bless! What a cutie!
It’s a risk bringing up kids here sure. But it could be worse: Serbia when Milosevic was in power, during the Holocaust, or perhaps anywhere in the States where guns are second nature to lunch boxes.

I agree, I will take my chances here. there are issues everywhere and we have our fair share. there is no need to make it worse with people’s negativity!
The risk is without a doubt worth it. And on some level I agree with Kevin, although I have experienced the crime, it doesn’t effect me very much or more than it would anywhere else i suppose.

Britain just got voted or polled or surveyed (or something) as the worst place to raise kids in the developed world. And I’ve taught in British schools, and believe me its scary.
I hated our strict uniform rules at school, but i now really appreciate what being hard core about the little things does for cohesion in a school, and general behaviour and respect for elders, just as one example.
Furrthermore, I had a garden and a pool to play in, and my peers werent getting pregnant at 15 because they were rewarded with a free council house for dropping an unwanted, uncared for sprog.
I know that I’m talking from a advantaged middle class perspective, and its not as easy for everyone at home. But I will be forever thankful that I was raised in South Africa, even with all of its problems.
Know what I mean?

Good move, the conscious choice! I’m raising 3, very deliberately, here, without, shock horror, access to any other passports! We’re on the cutting edge of energy in this magic place- I’d rather my kids grew up here with real people, in great beauty, taking nothing for granted, than anywhere else. Good gene pool you got there! Happy swimming!

Killa Cali so cute! So, so cute! I once read a comment by CliffyB (famed video game designer, fyi) wherein he said: “…bringing a child into the world is a scary thing. You don’t know if you have the next global leader or a genuine crackhead on your hands…but still, you do it!” So yeah, your kid might turn out to be a kaka or a Madiba, just raise them well, and atleast in South Africa, kids don’t get shot up and mass murdered at school
