Jackie Selebi is a tit
Posted by Don Packett under Uncategorized on April 2 2007 at 7:50 PMWhat kind of arsehole proposes to legalise prostitution and drinking in public for the duration of the 2010 World Cup?
This oke.
With SA’s high rate of HIV-affected sex workers, this is absolutely not cool. They say they controlled it all in Germany in 2006, but it’s still pretty dodgy to me. C’mon, who travels and needs to shag a prozzie?
Nasty.
Chatting about it to Ruan earlier, it seems pretty dodge to try get something, that not many people would approve of, started, if you’re not making cash off of it. Hmm.

Dude, I’m all for legalised prostitution. Who are we to say what a woman can do with their bodies. Also, when it’s legalised, t’s controlled, and controlled means less STDs etc.
Doing it only for the duration of the world cup though, that’s daft…!

I agree with Rich…!, legalising prostitution actually makes a lot of sense. Kudos to Selebi for saying something intelligent for once.
Australia, Germany and the Netherlands have all legalised prostitution, with positive results. We should follow their example. Prostitution is already widespread, we’d just be recognising reality if we legalise it.
And legalising it will also make the HIV problem better, not worse. Brothels will need to be registered and pay tax, while the prostitutes working there will need to take regular HIV tests to prove their status. They’ll also be safer, since they’ll no longer be at the mercy of shadowy pimps.
Some prostitutes will no doubt choose to keep operating illegally, in order to avoid the HIV checks and taxes, but their customers will soon be taken by the certified, professional and legal brothels.
The idea of it being only for the duration of the world cup is pretty silly, but I really doubt that’s going to happen. The reasons that make legalising prostitution a good idea will be just as valid after the world cup as during it, so I don’t see how Parliament will be able to make this only a temporary thing.

Oops… Is drinking in public illegal? I thought that was legalised over a decade ago? Have I just been lucky or did they stop controlling it? The poms will be chuffed.
Doesnt SA have bigger issues to worry about re the world cup than drunken 200 buck shags?
Solution: Free condoms with every 6-pack? Go Budwieser, since Castle missed the opportunity to be the official beer.

And we can collect their taxes!
Nigs pumping an SA prossie but maybe it’s a business opportunity to become the pimp i was born to be

I hear what you guys say, but I really can’t believe we can control it. Why would a prozzie join a brothel if she can scoop up one of the ‘I’m allowed to drink in public’ drunken tourists and pay no brothel fees (or whatever you call them).
If it all comes off, I hope I’m wrong.

I thought that was an April fools joke!

Don, the idea is that it’s the customers who’d make the choice. Hypothetically, if you were going to visit a prostitute, would you rather go to A) A cheap whore on the side of the road that’s probably loaded to the hilt with STDs, or B) A professionally-run brothel where the prostitutes are expected to practice safe-sex? In 90% of cases, it’s probably going to be the second choice, so in the long term street-side hookers are probably going to be squeezed out by the market.
The thing to remember is that this isn’t a solution to prostitution, insofar as it’s regarded as a problem. It’s just a recognition that prostitution exists, always has and that continued prohibition of it makes little sense. If we can see even a miniscule improvement in the lives of prostitutes, small decrease in their risk of contracting and spreading STDs and a tiny decrease in the power of criminal elements in controlling prostitution as an underground racket, we’ll be better off than we are now.

Totally understandable. I still reckon we have a long way to go though.

almost as ridiculous as holding back the passports of rugby players because the quota isnt high enough

Hey, anything that involves hookers is OK in my books…. That dude has my vote.

Legalised prostitution institutions have FAR lower rates of HIV infection.

I THINK IF THIS GUY CAN GIVE A GOOD PLAN THAT CAN BE IMPLEMENTED THEN GO AHEAD BUT PROVE IT FIRST
