Don, the idea is that it’s the customers who’d make the choice. Hypothetically, if you were going to visit a prostitute, would you rather go to A) A cheap whore on the side of the road that’s probably loaded to the hilt with STDs, or B) A professionally-run brothel where the prostitutes are expected to practice safe-sex? In 90% of cases, it’s probably going to be the second choice, so in the long term street-side hookers are probably going to be squeezed out by the market.

The thing to remember is that this isn’t a solution to prostitution, insofar as it’s regarded as a problem. It’s just a recognition that prostitution exists, always has and that continued prohibition of it makes little sense. If we can see even a miniscule improvement in the lives of prostitutes, small decrease in their risk of contracting and spreading STDs and a tiny decrease in the power of criminal elements in controlling prostitution as an underground racket, we’ll be better off than we are now.

I hear what you guys say, but I really can’t believe we can control it. Why would a prozzie join a brothel if she can scoop up one of the ‘I’m allowed to drink in public’ drunken tourists and pay no brothel fees (or whatever you call them).
