Change is good
Posted by Don Packett under Uncategorized on May 21 2007 at 8:11 AMMel directed me to this old map of Jo’burg. From 1897 to be exact. Looking at the segmentation, I’m glad (most of us) don’t feel that way anymore. Have a look at the hi-res version here.

Yes, change is good.

What? They had Google Earth back then? I keep trying to zoom in. Appalling to think this was a full 51 years before the Nats came to power, and the seeds of segregation had already been so strictly sown. Great find, thanks

I cringe. Travelling as a South African has it’s embarrassing moments. There has been more than once that I have been wrongly referred to as “a white supremacist racist pigâ€. It’s all about people’s perceptions. Maps like this explain a lot. Agreed. Change is good!

What amazes is people still get shocked by this stuff. Same ol’ same ol. Speak to the people who were in that situation to really get a pulse for just how hectic it was…
