What Absa doesn’t get about youth marketing
Posted by Rich...! under Uncategorized on July 22 2007 at 7:35 PMI spotted this billboard in a few spots around Jhb last week. I noticed it, because I hate it when marketers speak down to the youth, or at least, when they try to talk street - It’s not cool, it’s stupid, condescending, and just plain wrong:

Absa just think for a moment, you were voted coolest bank in the generation next survey before you ran wanky ads like this, not because you did. Obviously SA’s youth was fine with your previous marketing strategy, apparently they did not need you to come down to their level.
Just because they’re younger, doesn’t make them naive..!

This makes me cringe. “ur”… ugh. What customer cares where their bank ranks in the popularity charts anyway? Just be a bank!

I agree, and if they are going to do it, at least get it right!
It should be “Thx” not “Tnx”!

I would love to know how the questions in the Generation Next survey are actually posed and whether the results have any meaning, because there is no such thing as a “cool” bank.
On the other hand, never overestimate the intelligence of the consuming public. This is the same survey that ranked the Vodacom meerkat as the coolest brand icon, remember.

Duh. Paris Hilton is also “Cool”.. but she’s also stupid.
I’d rather base my decision to choose a bank on the official bank of the year award (Nedbank won last year).

It is clear that all the nitwitts that have negative comments do not bank with the coolest and best bank .ie ABSA

No Kevin,
As Mark said, if you want to make a statement, at least get the spelling right, you Nitwit (with one t).
Clearly you bank with ABSA.

They could’ve spent that advertising money on improving their damn service or expanding their call center – Comeon ABSA – you’re falling behind.
