iPhone in SA a reality
Posted by Rich...! under Uncategorized on August 28 2007 at 7:51 PMWell perhaps us South Africans may not need to wait that long after all for our iFoon, if the claims by iphonesimfree are to be believed and engadget seems to think that they are (via).

| Again: we can confirm with 100% certainty that iPhoneSIMfree.com’s software solution completely SIM unlocks the iPhone, is restore-resistant, and should make the iPhone fully functional for users outside of the US. |
That fucking rocks, I’m ordering mine today, I played with it at length when I was in the states, and yes, it is that good…!

Exactmall, the SA site, is selling the iPhone (locked) for R8,999.

Whoops…I didn’t realise that your link went to the Exactmall site as well. The only problem, as I see it, is Apple’s notorious refusal to support goods bought on the grey market…so if anything goes wrong with the iPhone, you’d be pretty much stuck…then again, nothing ever goes wrong with Apple products, right?

Hahaha, no, I updated the post with your link, sorry should have thanked you in the post.
Apple has no official support in SA gray, or otherwise, so you’re essentially in the same boat. Luckily one of the contry’s top Apple techs works for me, so I’ll take the risk.
As for Apple’s not breaking, lets just say that their marketing is a lot better than their product…!

Observer, not sure what it’s like in SA, but what the fuck is a grey market product? One that hasn’t had the official “we will fuck you with the import duty tax” applied?
I have Apple products purchased all over the world and never had any issue with them being fixed/swapped out etc, unless SA operates some new policy.
Typed on a mac book pro purchased in toyko on a mac keyboard purchased in Bangkok and a 30″ screen purchased in nyc.

Apple in SA views any product not purchased through their authorised resellers as “grey”, and they will therefore not support it.
Even when the product isn’t “grey”, their support is still appalling – I’ve got an 80gb iPod that’s been at their workshop, waiting to be fixed or swapped out, for three weeks now.
They refused to even look at another not-working iPod that I bought in London.
The problem goes all the way back to the 80s, when Apple pulled out of SA because of sanctions. There was a long gap when they weren’t officially represented in SA at all, and they seem to be still battling to catch up and do business the normal way.

Ok that sucks, heavily!!
As one of the beta testers for Leopard and a Pro user, that is so unlike Apple anywhere else in the world.
Wow, and people happily accept this bollocks about “grey” imports. I mean it’s not the first time i’ve heard the term

After we have discussed the pro and cons of the iphone, I would like to point out the fact that its going to cost R9000, thats just ridiculous. The Prada phone is just as nice and cost half the price and is in the country via Samsung.

Price schmice!
When you can blow 9k on a phone, you think you would use a samsung?
:0)
A toyota also has an engine, you wouldn’t catch me buying one tho

Haha Daniel, |I’m with you in principle…
…except I drive a Lexus (toyota).

True, but does it have a silly badge?
Aston Martin was/is/could be again Ford, but do you think that counted?
