Also spotted at the airport. All Nationwide flights grounded apparently due to the loss of their aviation license.
It seems that dropping engines from wings is frowned upon these days. A good thing really. From the Nationwide home page:
With immediate effect, all flights have been suspended until further notice. We have approached the C.A.A. for further details and guidance in respect of any actions they would like us to implement that would enable them to reinstate the AMO’s license at which point normal operations will resume.
Safety is our number one priority and we will not compromise the safety of our customers or crew.
We do not anticipate a prolonged disruption of air service due to the close cooperation that exists between the Civil Aviation Authority and Nationwide Airlines.
Of course, you’ll have heard all this by now, bloody two-hour flight…!

Why?
Because only a stupidstupidstupid bunch of people could vote for and back a man who:
1. was fired from his role as Deputy President,
2. thought showering could cure AIDS,
to run for the leader of the ANC, and ultimately the president of the country.
Now, I’m by no means a politician, but this sounds awfully similar to what went on in point 1 above. The race for party leader is a close one, but it seems to be swaying a little in Zuma’s favour. Now I ask you, would any sane individual vote for someone with so much dirt on him if they weren’t getting a little (or a lot) in return?
It’s crazy.
Like I said, I’m not an expert, so if anyone would like to clear any of this up I’d really appreciate it.

I just saw an SABC3 ad at the airport (belatedly) announcing the premiere of the hit TV show, Jericho.
Now this should be a good thing – The show rocks. However it was canned after the first season, much to the indignation of the show’s fans. It now looks possible that they may revive it.
However I’m still surprised that SABC3 would launch a show that they know dies right in the middle of a story-arc…!

So TED is on its way to Africa again, this time in Cape Town – Nice:
TEDAfrica will be held in Cape Town, South Africa on September 29-October 1, 2008 (save the date!), and will follow the format of this year’s event in Arusha, Tanzania.
The conference will be organized by a wonderful local team with whom we have just signed a license agreement. The four-person team includes TED Fellow Kelo Kubu and the conference will be operated out of a new South Africa-based non-profit organization devoted to promoting a better future for the continent, the “TED Africa Foundation”.
I attended, and was lucky enough to deliver a 3-minute preso at TED Global in Oxford in 05.
it was very rad, except that Chris Anderson is a bit (read: a lot) pompous and the event itself reeks of elitism – and not in a good way.
If A-Listers are your thing, this is for you. If it’s content you’re after, consider Pop!Tech in Camden, MA. Even with the flights, you’ll probably save yourself some cash, and it was, for me anyway, a far better event…!

I saw a link on Mike’s page the other day to this video of his brother Dave singing:
Now I think you can tell from my post yesterday that I have slightly different taste in music to this, but it’s really good. I can’t imagine that people wouldn’t buy it. C’mon Mike, make him famous bro. You can start by getting him to perform at the next 27 dinner. Good gene pool.

Yeah, so it was only a matter of time for this book to come out, although I’ll admit that they were a lot quicker than I thought they’d be – I guess the writing was indeed on the wall (or in the pages, if you will – and you shouldn’t) for a while before the World Cup.
Thing is, it’s going to be the same old story. I’ve read both Pienaar and Krige’s biographies, and while cool, the formula is the same:
Early days – rise of career – politics – sporting culmination – unbearable politics causing departure – the future – the end.

Last night, myself and a bunch of the Links headed off to watch CT based post punk/metal band, The Doppler Effect, in Cafe Arc. Okay so a big part of the reason that the guys went was to watch fellow Link, Paul, playing with his band, Andre van der Walt. Either way, the show kicked ass. Chaos Theory kicked off, and despite the FOH engineer taking quite a while to find his mojo, the guys showed that they have a shit-tonne going for them (again, just wish that I could actually have heard the vocals).
Then came The Doppler Effect, man-a-fucking-live, what a set. Crazy-ass energy on stage and even the relatively dull metal (punk kids rock) crowd seemed to go off. I particularly enjoyed their live version of Bittersweet heart, as well as their second encore (the crowd insisted), Europe’s, The final countdown – dude! Insane. Be sure to check them out if you can, or order their EP here.
Lastly, it was Paul’s band. Guitar, bass, vocals, and samples. No drums, no English – and heavy as fuck. The guys saw a killer show, the girls saw Paul. I heard one say, “That is without a doubt the sexiest man alive” and a second said, “I want to orgasm just watching him.”
That’s it then, I’m learning guitar.
From their it was business as usual, a near bar brawl with farm types, girls kissing eachother, and a load of laughter. Good times.
Seeing as we’re talking music, here’s wee a bonus for you:
All that remains may not be local, but they are definitely bitchin…!

If anyone sees or is offered to buy a 17″ Macbook Pro, without power or any attachments, please could you get hold of us, it was stolen from the office yesterday. If it helps you any, the user is PacMac.
Oh, it might still have this Gelaskin on it too.
If you could spread the word that would rock. Thanks.

Saw this at the News Cafe in the not-so-cheaper duty free at OR Tambo international departures last week.
I thought it was a pretty clever idea. Would’ve been even better if it actually worked though!
No waiter when we pressed CALL, no bill when we pressed BUTTON I. We were close on pressing BUTTON II to call the manager when our waitress eventually walked past and we asked for the bill.
Rad things are only rad when they function properly. Or at all.
It wasn’t all bad though, I would definitely recommend the Eggs Benedict next time you venture out SA. Yum.

We saw this braai book at Fascination Books in Fourways a while ago,
but we felt a bit weirded out when it came to the lamb section, and this pic popped up.
Hmmm, can’t wait to rip that little lamb from that loving child’s arms, skin it, chop it up, braai it, and feed it back to the kid.

Long time readers will be aware of my deep hatred for the sport of cycling (directed specifically at the dress code).
However as I patiently set out for the hospital today amid the chaos that is the *gritted teeth*94.7 cycle challenge, I decided to just grin and bear it. I pulled out my phone, went to highveld.mobi (I was on the road already), and clicked on traffic. This is what I got:
WTF? Which roads are you driving?
I blame Jeremy Mansfield and the rest of his team. No reason really, I just do…!

Hi there Fruit & Veg City people. Look, as a whole I like what you guys are doing, good work on the Fresher stuff. Just one wee thing though…
Err, guys, someone needs to tell you that an apostrophe in “it’s” denotes a truncation i.e. it is, and not the possessive. “Its” was what you were looking for (don’t believe me?). Ooh, I wonder who signed off on that.

Nothing like a contentious title to get the blood boiling eh?
OK – if the research stats are valid – that 63 percent of black South Africans support quotas in sport, it explains a lot. Ergo: That 63% of black South Africans are incapable of logical thought. That doesn’t bode well for the future. Sigh.
Before you get your knickers in a twist, go read this great post by our good friend Clive Simpkins.
I gotta say though, quotas as anything more than a guideline. really suck. Having said that, they are a reality and not really worth bitching about too much…!
