Web/Tech

We recently graced Michelle with our weird (in a good way) and zany presence in her dream.

Michelle, it was a pleasure having you over. Also, we have many different things here at the office, an airport terminal, unfortunately, isn’t one of them. Ya’ll come back now, ya’hear!

The time has come for some changes to be made to Jo’blog. Yes, yes, I know that you are all shocked, as were we when we first caught wind of the news. The changes have come about because of Don not being happy with his presence at Jo’blog. He forced us to take drastic measures in terms of changing our Jo’blog corporate id.

Don wasn’t entirely happy with how his hair came across in the banner image. He recreated his image and forced us to upload the new banner. Although we were all opposed to the change we have decided that it is probably for the better.

wikipedialogo.jpgI seriously hope you do. For the uninitiated, wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia, that gets populated and edited by anyone who wants to. Simply search for a topic of interest to you and see what’s said, and if you have something to add, go ahead, but please, don’t abuse the system by adding silly things like this to the listing for South Africa:

Hey, things are looking up, we decided to get off our arses and register www.joblog.co.za. For the time being, (we’re back on our arses) it will simply forward to the typepad URL, but you can refer to us, or link to us, at the .co.za addy.

That was a hint kids…!

I read in biz-community that there is new business blogger out there. Brian Berkman is a local PR guru, and I imagine, due to the publicity of the recent global PR blog week, has decided to try his hand.

Now, while a glance at his blog shows content that has potential, he does seem to be missing a few fundamentals:
- Firstly, there is no feed, forcing you to visit the site, rather than reading it in a news aggregator, With the term “No feed, no read” getting bandied about so much, this is something that needs to be addressed.
- There are no trackbacks, worse for Brian than for me, but how will he know when he’s quoted? (I guess he can keep checking Technorati).
- Truncated posts, this is by far the biggest sin. Not only do I need to visit the site, but I need to follow links just to read one post! Crazy loco!
- A last weird thing is the display of complete URLs rather than just linked text, I imagine that this is simply part of a learning curve. My suspicion is that Brian has launched without spending much time engaging (reading and commenting) other bloggers

All that being said though, I think business blogging should be encouraged locally, I’m blue in the face trying to get my PR clients to buy into this, so a huge congratulations to Brian for having the guts to be the first…nice one Mr. B.

Onwards an upwards…!

A new South African blogger is born. Apparently this is a temporary URL, but if the first few posts are anything to go by, it’s going to be a goodie.

Welcome Banga…!

Thing is, I saw it was from a local addy so I actually gave it a glance.

It’s pretty rad, these guys will take a voice-mail message you record on their system and send it to an email addy of your choice. I cant yet decide where and when I’d use this, but it’s not a bad service all in all. Oh, and you only pay for the call.

It would be even better if their site worked though…!

When I landed in Joburg after a gig in Cape Town last Thursday, I was poked in the ribs by a young-ish kid telling me that my Bluetooth on my phone wasn’t set up, and he wanted to send me a pic. Not such an amazing story, but it backs up my thoughts on this:

Earlier today, while waiting for all guests to enter the venue for a preso I was running for Liberty Life, some punk tried to pair with my machine, which is Bluetooth-enabled, which resulted in a pop-up asking me if I’d like to pair with device ‘Bang ! !’. I rejected the offer, and seconds later it asked me again. I rejected, froze the still on the screen, went to my Finder and turned my Bluetooth off.

What are people like? Finding devices, then trying to pair. Who would accept the invitation from an unknown source anyway? Person A who’s finding and pairing with a device needs to enter a passkey, then needs to give the passkey to Person B so that they can successfully pair. Or you could just get into Bluejacking.

Thankfully it happened before the preso started, with only about twenty people inside the venue of the eight-hundred that attended. A tip for all: Turn your Bluetooth off.

Bang ! !, you got me good.

When MetroFM brought out their TV ad where a guy walks past a barking dog and he makes a beat to the bark, I thought they struck something huge. I was right. Then came the Beat of Africa ad, where big bass beats pulse from brick walls to the human heart.

Their latest is the Move advert. Dark, eerie, special effects and chicks in leather on big bikes. I can honestly say that the ad doesn’t make me want to ‘tune in’, but as a video editor I can really appreciate how it has been edited and produced. Also, their gadget review really impressed me… I wonder why…

MetroFM – It’s where you’re at.
